I did buy this for a class, and doing the required work was rather time consuming, however, it was also very rewarding and useful. Never again will you wonder when a medical professional throws out some term. Despite knowledge of Latin and/or Greek, this book just drills you on breaking words down when applied to English, as well as some light discussion of semantic shift over time and some other basic linguistic principles, which are sufficient for the layman or classics student, while short enough to not be tedious to someone in linguistics. The examples used are a bit antiquated in the chapter introductions, but as the rest of the lessons deal with antiquated suffixes, prefixes and roots/bases of words, it is rather timeless. I still frequently carry it with me to brush up on what I learned.

First, do note that it is most definitely a textbook. If you just want a book to help you understand the English language, I would read Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue.I had to read this for a course on Latin and Greek roots, and found this book very easy to follow despite not being very familiar with the subject matter. I did feel a few things could have used better explaining (it doesn't explain "doublets" well at all, and there were parts that were quite repetitive), and I think the usefulness of this book really comes down to how the instructor uses it, as well as the workbook. But overall, it was an engaging read, one that gave me a new area of interest beyond my credit requirement.

Twenty plus years ago I took a college class, Greek and Latin Elements in English. I loved the class, kept my class notes and notebook, but the book vanished when I went overseas. I was sad for a long time until I found it on Amazon Prime. I love it! As far as I can tell, it's accurate. I'm not a scholar, but I love knowing more about our language and passing on tidbits to help my children with vocabulary.

I originally checked this book out from my library to use as a textbook for my undergraduate etymology class, but I loved it so much that I had to have my own copy! Each chapter gives you a set of base/root words from Latin and Greek so you can learn them in chunks. However, I will admit that the chapter and index organization is not the clearest for the reader, but it's not half bad once you get used to it.

Not what I thought it was, this book is about English words that have changed or came from other origins... not a strictly translation book... more of a work book in a sence. I was looking for a quick reference book for my nursing classes. This could help but not in the way or time saving way I was looking for.

This was my textbook for my undergrad etymology class, which was probably one of my favorite college classes. I had sold this textbook back after the class ended, but I couldn't stand to part with it! This book divides up Greek and Latin roots into chapters so you can learn a little bit at a time and is fairly comprehensive. This is likely a great gift for the odd word nerd like me. :)

I'm only one chapter in and I already love the book. I know it's meant to teach vocabulary, but I love the history I learned at the start of the book a lot. It is already worth the purchase

Meh. Not a good read. I mean, its an old old text book. Refers to the USSR etc.Just really boring writing.

Whilst the content is quite good it probably isn't on par with some other books by say Matt Pharr, books from ACM or Academic Press I think the biggest issue with the book is that the quality of the paper is a bit below par and all images are black and white.Normally black and white isn't a problem, but when the book is about graphics and there is a statement in the book like (e.g.) "...notice the unique HLSL effect on the blue ball compared to the green..." it makes it a bit difficult. Even a color plate section would have been nice.

Its hard for me to treat the books of this series separately (ShaderX 3, ShaderX 4, ShaderX 5). They are all very good books of GPU-Gems level or higher. In comparison with GPU Gems, they are more academic, i. e. they are rather short and more applicable to wide range of applications then GPU Gems ones (while GPU Gems series is more scientific, state of the art, considering one particular research) and the accompanying CD is much more better (lots of working examples, most with source code).Sections (Image-Space, Shadows) are also very helpful to figure out what is useful for you.This series is not for beginners anyway, so please, go Cg Tutorial or DX SDK Tutorial and don't put 2 or 3 marks for these books because you can't cope with them.

I was disappointed not to find any code - only demos of applications on a few of the chapters (e.g radiosity tool, gpu terrain). IMHO it is better to have fewer topics/chapters and better coverage of each topic, with source code etc. As M. Severino 's review correctly states 'Each article is a source of ideas ', so don't expect to learn how to implement all the techniques in the book.Some authors have included lots of code, others have included none.I vote against the "*gems-style" books, more attention to the educational side of these books is needed. Flashy programmers who want to show off please go elsewhere.

I just went to Djibouti for a 10 day visit and this is one of the only English speaking guidebooks available (used). Luckily, it's very well written and the descriptions are still spot on. Maybe it's because very little changes in Djibouti given its geological history, but the author's recommendations (restaurants and tourist attractions) are still accurate. I've used a lot of lonely planet guides and this is by far the most readable and full of interesting details. Highly recommended!

I gave this book to my husband who is working in Djibouti. So far, there have been no inconsistencies in the information presented and the actual culture, climate, etc. of Djibouti. Accurate and highly readable. I reccomend this book to anyone planning a trip to Djibouti.

I live in Norway, and Africa's Horn is far from my everyday life. I have travelled several times to Eritrea though, and have been searching for guide books from the country. When I went to Eritrea last fall it was with great pleasure I bought the LP book by Frances Linzee Gordon, Ethiopia, Eritrea & Djibouti.The book is one of the best LP books I've read. The writing is clearly, and it gives us good insight in history, facts, geography, and so on. I have read parts of the book about all three countries, but the Eritrean part is the only one I have actuallu used when travelling.The books has some very good pictures and maps, and give alot of up to date information. My favorite part is the part about Asmara's architecture, "Asmara, or Piccola Roma, soon came to epitomise the new philosophy: it was not just beautiful, but was well planned, well built and, above all, functiomal. The book is a good guide to use when you plan your travel ahead, and is even better when you actually are there and need or want information.An extra benefit of the book is the small notes you find alot of, giving interesting information. Reading these notes makes your travel alot more special.When I travel I use my guidebooks as kind of diaries. I write down restaurants I visit, hotel I stay at, interesting places I see and so on. And this book is filled with my writings almost on all pages. Gordon has seen it all, and gives very useful information about a very interesting, though little known country.Britt Arnhild Lindland

It is hard to give this guidebook the rating it deserves, since I gave five stars to many other Lonely Planet guidebooks already. This one, among them all, is perhaps the best one I have used. It provides great information for the traveler, with plenty of tips, and I have not found one single error or flaw. Meanwhile, all the information and advice are filled with a great sense of humour, and marvelous writing style, which must come from the author herself. Deep knowledge on the region also transpires from the book, which provides extremely thrilling and interesting insights into the region's history and culture. All in all, the author did a great unparalleled job. Also in consideration of her captivating look in the photograph, I wish I could meet her and personally congratulate her. Frances, even though I don't know you, well done ! I wonder if we might have a Lonely Planet guide on Somalia come out soon, perhaps written by the same author.

Frances Linzee Gordon's guide to Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti is not only clearly the best of the available guide books for these countries, but is also a real pleasure to read. I have used it twice this year while filming television documentaries in Ethiopia for National Geographic Television and it has made both trips easier, more interesting and more enjoyable than they would otherwise have been. The practical information is comprehensive and accessible and the historical and geographical information is elegantly written and more readable than is often the case in guide books. But what makes this guidebook stand out is the infectious passion and enthusiasm for the countries which it displays. The personal reflections and the incidental information (particularly in the boxed text) give the guidebook a texture which really helps to make the country come alive. I would higly reccomend it to anyone making a trip to Ethiopia.

As a Lonely Planet author, I'd like to echo the words of other reviewers of this book. This is clearly Lonely Planet's best title - the writing is clear, concise and informative, the asides are entertaining, the tone is objective yet engaging, and Frances Linzee Gordon's photos are nothing short of spectacular. Congratulations, Frances - you've produced a winner!

A recent front page article in the New York Times on the Lalibela churches in northern Ethiopia sent me running for my LP copy of this book. I was most pleasantly surprised to find over a dozen pages of detailed information on this incredible center of early Christianity. F. Linzee-Gordon's first hand account of a visit to the churches provided a most informative background lacking in the NY Times article. Well done!

I am a big fan of Lonely Planet. I travel a lot around the the world using ONLY LP guides. I just bought Ethiopia guide to plan my next trip - this is the best LP guide ever. Full with information and helpful advices, there is everything. And what was my surprise - the guide is written only by one writer, a woman and all the pics are taken by her. Congratulations Frances Linzee Gordon and LP for this masterpiece. This is not only a good guide, it's a good book!
