Still trying to adapt to the new interface of this book , the diagrams that denote the design strategies are very very small, .i cannot make a good evaluation at the moment as i am still trying to understand the book.How ever at first glance it seems to give a lot of insight on sustainable strategies . the book build feels very delicate but the steel ring allows for complete 180 deg page flipping.

This is one of the best books I've seen that address building architectural design considerations that affect heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. It presents tidbits from real designs, focuses on maximizing the effects of the local climate on the building toward the objective of a comfortable and usable living/working space, and addresses supplemental systems as well. This information presumes a level of knowledge relating to some of these concepts that I don't currently have, making it a pretty hard read in many places. However, the book digs pretty deep into each area, providing enough information to get a good start on a building design. The fusion of engineering and creativity is my favorite feature of this book. It provides insight into creative building designs while also presenting the more quantitative factors necessary to size and evaluate a design for intended use.

This book has great drawings and information. However I was looking for more insight on energy conservative construction detailing.

The book seems full of content, but the diagrams are small and too precious. The additional content on the Wiley companion site goes to a website that doesn't work. Overall I am disappointed.

If you are interested in passive and sustainable design, this book explains the principles very easily. It also takes it further by breaking down which principles to use in what climates. A new edition of this book is only released once about every ten years, so get your hands on it. My teacher is co-author of the living building challenge, and she was the one who interested me in this book. That is why I had to immediately by the new edition that was released this February. Enjoy, it is no frills easy to understand book that is really geared towards passive design.

Pretty good for pretty cheap. Has multiple ways that designers can evaluate and implement better designs and gives quick explanations. One of the only textbooks I actually kept.

About the Author

Marie Porter began sewing spandex costumes as a way to finance her figure skating training, starting at age 11. By the time she took an extended break from the fashion industry at the ripe old age of 25, she had created stretchy works of art for various entertainers, Olympic athletes, the Canadian national synchro swimteam, WWE wrestlers, and more. Marie wrote "Sewing for Skaters and Gymnasts and Dancers... Oh My!" at the age of 21 - the first sewing manual of its kind. Due to popular demand, it was followed by "The Skating Dress Style Book" a year later - focusing on pattern alteration techniques for style. She was soon touring North America, teaching people her techniques in seminars. 10 years later, those basic, black and white photocopied manuals - featuring hand drawn sketches - were combined, expanded on, and updated to become "Sewing for Skaters" - one of the first books in the Spandex Simplified series. This book is excellent for both the experienced and novice sewers looking to save a buck on skating dresses. Great ideas, helpful fitting techniques. Marie shares creative options throughout each chapter. Directions are clear, helpful and easily understood.This book has allowed me to sew all of the skating dresses for my daughters and have established a reputation for creative ideas. It is my secret weapon. I wish I would have had this resource when I first started sewing skating dresses. It would have save me a lot of time and fabric.
