Review

“There is so much beauty, wisdom, and truth in this book, I felt the pages almost humming in my hands. I was riveted and enlightened, inspired and consoled. This is a book for all of us, right now.” - Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild“This book is endlessly wise, funny, and full of heart. To say that its clear-eyed, doom-laden―yet loving―message is important and timely would be an understatement. It is unapologetically sincere, utterly moving.” - Tommy Orange, author of There There“Deep Creek is a love letter to earth, animals, and the best of humanity. Pam Houston has taken our heartache and woven it back into hope. Her stories of love, loss, and a life lived in relationship to land give us good reasons not to give up on ourselves or each other. This is the book we need right now to remind us how to endure―passionately. An unstoppable heart song.” - Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Misfit’s Manifesto“Pam Houston is the rodeo queen of American letters. In Deep Creek, her voice has never been more fully realized, and her message never more important.” - Samantha Dunn, author of Not by Accident“Full of wisdom, wit, and loving attention, Pam Houston’s survey of her life and land should be required reading for anyone who loves this planet we call home.” - Camille T. Dungy, author of Guidebook to Relative Strangers“In the face of the world’s turmoil, this book is utter clarity. In the face of the world’s harshness, this book is a soft place to land…If you find yourself careening toward despair, pick up Deep Creek and read even just one page. The words there will lift you back to hope―not the sentimental kind, but the kind that can and does change the world for the better. What gratitude we owe to Pam Houston for writing it.” - B. K. Loren, author of Animal, Mineral, Radical“Houston has a great range of vision, and she’s fun to read. She gets the land right…In this perfectly American memoir, a restless heart finds its place.” - Craig Childs, author of Atlas of a Lost World“A profound and inspiring love letter to one piece of Earth―and to the rest of it, as well.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Houston's vision find a solid place among the chronicles of quiet appreciation of the American wilderness, without the misanthropy that often accompanies the genre; her passion for the land and its inhabitants is irresistibly contagious.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Always impressive, Houston is in striking form here. Her talent remains remarkable and her words extraordinarily affecting and effective.” - Booklist (starred review)

Okay, I'll admit I haven't read this book yet, but I have ordered it and will add to this review soon once I have completed it. I simply want to say - don't NOT buy it because of Alexandra Fuller's review in the NYT. She rips it apart and incorrectly states that "water buffaloes and cheetahs don't exist in nature together" - another inaccuracy about the Africa that Fuller claims to know so well, and yet which she mischaracterizes in several of her books. (I was born and lived in South Africa, and spent two years in Zimbabwe, so I have first-hand knowledge of that period of time in those countries. She doesn't even get the date of the Civil War correct in her own memoir. Scribbling the Cat feels like a work of imagination.) I would certainly recommend Fuller's Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight - it is beautifully written, seems emotionally true, and is more or less accurate about Rhodesia at that time - but her memoirs mostly contain inaccuracies far more egregious than any contained in Houston's, I am willing to guess. I find it astonishing that she can be so critical of Pam Houston under the circumstances.

Pam Houston’s book, Deep Creek, Finding Hope in the High Country, arrived, and I started reading and couldn’t stop. Though it includes a traumatic childhood, it’s a celebration of nature and survival. What surprised me though is that when she asked her class at UC Davis how many had spent a night sleeping in the wilderness, the answer was zero. Zero.I wondered what is it to lose contact with the land, the earth, to not see the full passage and shades of light, day to night, night to day. Ms. Houston gives us this passage through her observations and journeys. We share and feel the ups and down, fires and cold, and the beauty of love and connection shared. I felt my muscles, both physical and spiritual, firm as I hiked and traveled with her and shared the beauty of this earth. In 1971, Captain Edgar J. Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, was changed by seeing the earth from space. He felt the love we share, a universal love, what he called “quantum resonance with all that is”.We may not be able to spend a night in the wilderness but through Pam’s book we get a taste of seeing the earth in her wholeness and we even experience a belief in ghosts.

As is her bent toward humor and emotional depth, Pam has given a achingly beautiful portrayal of the meaning of place and home as an anchor for one who spends half her life traveling to distant places. Yes, I believe this place claimed Pam when she was searching for a home. Her descriptions of the landscape, the daily rituals of caring for and being blessed by the people and natural wonder of this place make me want to go slow in the reading to make the gift of her offering last.

I highly recommend Deep Creek. Pam Houston's latest book is a journey through a lifetime of courage and contrast. Of the fire of a father and the ice of a mother. Of hovering like a kingfisher over an exceptionally violent past, diving straight into its turbulent waters, and shaking it off and choosing to forage elsewhere. It's a book of godmothers, in the form of nannies, safe sleepovers, impossible down payments and the hundreds of narwhals. Of straddling the yawning chasm between grieving our battered Mother Earth and celebrating Her. Pam is a person who looks straight into the eyes of wolfhounds and students and storms and sees such undeniable grace she's knocked to her knees, taking us all with her. The stories in Deep Creek are motivated by generosity and fueled by gratitude; in the end, it's a book about alchemy, about using the shards of heartbreak to carve a bigger vessel to hold more love. Please do yourself a favor. Read this book and pass it on. We will all be better off.

Deep Creek is a mid-life autobiography written by a strong, resourceful, adventuresome, multi-talented woman. Pam Houston has overcome an abusive childhood, the small-minded jealousy of academics, catastrophic wildfire, and death-defying wilderness adventures arising from her own wanderlust. She has survived spectacularly well, making the most of her abilities, finding home on her Colorado ranch where she builds gratifying relationships with some admirable natives in the nearby small town of Creede and can host an over growing cast of remarkable friends. Pam Houston is a consistently effective storyteller who documents her struggles to know who she has become and where she truly belongs. She has become a forgiving, grateful, and wise person. Deep Creek is truly inspirational.

Deep Creek is a wonderful book. It compares to a quilt - many pieces and parts stitched together to form a whole. It centers on the author's property in the high country of Colorado and her experiences there. Along the way we get ruminations on the importance of neighbors, how farm animals respond to harsh weather, the pleasures of serendipitous purchases, how to scrimp and save for those things really important, and the strange world of academia.Do give this one a try. It's very well written and will hold your attention on multiple subjects.

This author was new to me when I came upon the book. I'm so glad I happened upon it as it was very well written and engaging. The author had a tough childhood and is searching for her place in the world when she comes upon a small town in Colorado and a ranch that speaks to her. While it isn't "about" animals, the animals of her world inhabit all the pages. It is an honest, refreshing story of one person's search for their true life.

I have always loved Pam Houston's books. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and was envious of the life she is living. I enjoyed it so much I went back and ordered "Cowboys Are My Weakness" (had read it many years ago) and re-read it. I think it should be required reading for any female over the age of 16. In fact, both of them should. There is much to learn about life choices in both.

This book helped me a lot. I had a very base knowledge of PM terms and functions when I got this book and started studying. If you just study this book, in my opinion you will probably have enough to pass, though I found the actual test questions to be a bit more difficult than what is contained in this book. I used this book as my main study guide but also had CERTMASTER and Pocket Prep as additional guides. Although I read here and there that this cert was pretty easy (which I didn't find it to be), I didn't want to leave any doubt. In my opinion, this book puts down a very solid foundation to pass the test, I just found it a bit more beneficial to have additional options.

Overall very useful study aide for the Project+ exam. Using this and free training for the PMP I was able to pass the Project+ exam on my first try. It also has some flash cards and practice tests online you can access as well. There is also a link to a website that gives you 10% of the certifcation voucher with code WILEY2018

I have been using this series for years and it has never let me down. As a SME on the A+, I would recommend this series to anyone studying for any of the CompTIA exams. I have also tried the kindle version, but I like to purchase the bound product so I can pass it along to others.

Passed the class

Good overview / introduction to project management. Passed my Project+ on the first try with >90%.

I found this book very hard to follow. The concepts felt loose and making connections between them was difficult. I felt there was a sort of glue lacking after most chapters. Many concepts, definitions and explanations seemed to overlap without any real clarification. I had to backtrack many times after most chapters to try and figure out the order and logic on how different components fit together. I don't recommend this book unless you already know what's going on or you have strong supplemental material.

Good book and by reading it you’ll pass the PM cert. Alos helps to have corporate experience

The only book you need to pass the exam, very well explained, passed the exam on my first try.Just make sure to do the practice exams provided by the book to solidify your knowledge. Good luck!

Ida, Always, by Caron Levis Charles Santoso

Review

“Inspired by two real-life polar bears, Gus and Ida, who were residents of New York City’s Central Park Zoo, this wonderful story about the loss of a loved one is beautifully told. It’s an example of children’s books at their best. Santoso’s dense, luscious paintings give the couple a solid, reassuring world to live in…. This is a difficult story to tell for both children and adults, but “Ida, Always” does it with simplicity and grace.” (Dan Yaccarino The New York Times Book Review, February 12, 2016)A Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Book of the Year (5-8 category)“I am in awe of this wise, endearing, tender and beautiful—so very beautiful—book, which is sure to become a classic of children's literature…. The words and the pictures meld perfectly to explore the emotional journey of love and loss, breaking your heart and then beginning to mend it.” (Judith Viorst, author of the bestselling Alexander books and The Tenth Good Thing About Barney)*STARRED REVIEW* "Inspired by two polar bears that lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo several years ago, Levis (Stuck with the Blooz) takes readers on a reassuring emotional journey that explores friendship, love, and loss.... Levis’s characterization of caring, supportive friends is spot on.... The description of Ida’s passing is brief, poignant, and gentle, as is Gus’s adjustment to life without his best friend. Santoso (I Don’t Like Koala) creates gauzy backgrounds featuring the city skyline and the zoo’s greenery, and his slightly anthropomorphic bears convey a wealth of feeling through their expressive eyes, smiles, and body language." (Publishers Weekly, November 2015, *STARRED REVIEW*)*STARRED REVIEW* "Loosely based on Gus and Ida, the polar bears who lived at the Central Park Zoo until Ida’s death in 2011 and Gus’s death in 2013, this frank yet sensitive work explores loss and affirms the power of friendship.... While the tone is gentle, Levis is honest about the turmoil and anguish of terminal illness.... The quiet, lyrical text is complemented by the soft, evocative visuals.... Santoso’s design is particularly inspired, with good use of the gutter and perspective.... Although Gus experiences real loss upon Ida’s death, the book ends on a hopeful note, emphasizing the strength of the friendship and Gus’s memories of Ida. VERDICT A tender and honest portrayal of coming to terms with death." (School Library Journal, January 2016, *STARRED REVIEW*)*STARRED REVIEW* "In an honest and upfront manner, [Caron Levis] gracefully reflects the complicated emotions of not only dealing with loss afterward, but living with the dying. In Levis's soothing narrative, Ida will always be with Gus, because, as Ida told him,"You don't have to see it to feel it." The polar bears are sweetly and expressively drawn, and the sky, clouds, shadows, sunshine and rain in Australian illustrator Charles Santoso's (I Don't Like Koala) softly luminous digital paintings all beautifully mirror the story's joy and sadness." (Shelf Awareness, February 2016, *STARRED REVIEW*)“Ida, Always…stands out as that exceptional issue book that expands the audience into the realm of being a book everyone should read…. More than any other book on loss, Ida, Always manages to tell a story that is just as good at comforting a child experiencing loss as it is at explaining loss to a child who has yet to experience it. This second quality lifts Ida, Always into being “a book for every child.”” (Kenny Brechner Publishers Weekly ShelfTalker, April 7th, 2016)"This is a picture book about loss and grief, so it is probably not a coincidence that it is pictorially dominated by skies. Santoso paints amazing skies. There's a spectacular view of the sky on almost every page of the story.... The book is very blunt about what's happening: "one day, when her body stopped working, Ida would die." Levis writes about death and the bears' mutual devotion with surprising beauty.... But some of the most affecting passages are hardly poetic at all... the pictures are so simple they're heartbreaking." (Kirkus Reviews, December 2015)"This simple story of bereavement and friendship is made even more affecting by its richly colored, quiet illustrations.... A heartfelt and powerful depiction of loss and recovery." (Booklist, January 2016)"This thoughtful story is a good way to introduce a discussion of death to young children.... The soft gentle illustrations perfectly complement the understated, quiet text. This would be a good addition to library collections on death and dying for children." (School Library Connection, May 2016, Recommended)

One of the best children books dealing with death, and in such a beautiful, graceful way. My 4 year old requested this book every night for several months, and a dozen or so times in the year since. I admit, I had trouble reading it the first time through as I didn't know what the story was about, but as the pages turned, I could sense it coming, feared it coming, and physically had trouble reading (crying, sniffling, short of breath, quivering chin and lips) when we finally turned to the page when it happened. But the auther is so delicate and gentle with the delivery and how the other characters cope with the loss.

THiscwas the perfect book to help my five year old understand his Great Grandfather's illness and death. I love that it isn't religious, but helps children understand that it is their choice what to believe. Explaining the "mixed up feelings" that surround grief, for him, and for those around him. He even said after Grandpa had passed, "will it be on the front page of the paper tomorrow?" So I printed a newspaper article and he delivered it to my husband, and to his Grandmother. It was so touching and really helped him feel like a part of the healing.

This is a heartwarming story based on two actual polar bears in a New York City zoo. It's a love story. When Ada no longer comes to play, her sweet friend doesn't understand. The caring woman who works at the zoo lovingly explains what's happened with Ada.When I read this book to my elementary students, there were tears. It opened up wonderful conversations about grief and sorrow.I highly recommend this beautiful book. The artwork draws the reader into the story. At the end of the book, the author gives a brief account of the two bears she based the story on.I felt it really brought sensitivity and compassion to the hearts ♥️ of the children.

Ida, Always by Caron Levis and illustrated by Charles Santoso is a sweet, two-hankie picture book that depicts how loved one’s imprint in our world and on our hearts remains after they die. It deals with death that acknowledges the sadness and grief and celebrates life and relationships.A pleasure for eye, ear and heart, Ida, Always focuses on sound to capture the loving relationship of two polar bears, the bustling zoo where they live and the vibrant city which surrounds them. (“Keys clicked and shoes clacked … buses groan,; trucks rumble …children laugh.” This encapsulates the theme: even when the people and places we love are out of sight, the sounds that surround us hold the audio track of precious memories.Adoption-attuned Lens Adoptees may find solace in a book like this because it invites them to intentionally search for and preserve good memories about relationships they have lost. Even when they lack actual memories, parents can help them imagine moments that his birth parents “might” have shared with them. Even kids with trauma histories are viscerally connected to their birth parents. They might benefit from finding some positive recollections, (Not to cancel out or invalidate any trauma or the reality of hurtful histories but as the first step to finding a way to heal any damage.)--Gayle H. Swift, "ABC, Adoption & Me"

As others have said, a beautiful book. But what I like best about it is that it really spoke to my granddaughter after the loss of her Papa. Like Ida, he got seriously sick and a cure wasn't possible. And like Ida, there were days when he could play and days when he needed to rest and be alone. And like Ida, he went to sleep and died peacefully. We cry and laugh and reminisce when we read it.

This book is a perfect way to help us process the death of a dear friend with our preschooler, who has a lot of questions. I appreciate that it acknowledges mixed-up range of thoughts and emotions experienced during the process of losing a loved one and after they have died. A great benefit for us and for my practice with children is that the book is not religious. Yet, it gives a way for the child to cope with the loss and feel connected to the loved one. I am so grateful this book was recommended to us.

This book explains dying and death in a way even my 2 year old can understand. I was looking for a picture book to help with those concepts as my dad is dying. This book exceeded my expectations. The pictures are beautiful and expressive and the story is deep, but simple. My son understands that Ida is sick and Gus is sad and sometimes angry. I highly recommend this book. But be ready to be teary.

Great book! I bought this book to use with a student whose dad passed away because of cancer. It attends to aspects of long term illness and would be suitable for talking about long term illness or losing someone you love with a child. It could work for children as young as 1st or 2nd grade and maybe up through junior high if adapted properly.

This book demonstrates a high level but very useful mathematical approach towards Identity & Access Management (IAM). Starting with the generalization of concepts of users, authentication and authorization and expressing these basic IAM functions as multiplication of matrices, the author in subsequent chapters extends this approach to the role-based access control, risk and trust. Although not very useful for the practical implementation of IAM systems, this books provides a level of generalization of IAM entities, processes and problems that enable IAM discussions in mathematical terms.

I was looking for a book on IAM that is not focused on a particular set of products and/or implementations, since I just wanted something as a reference for the IAM model in general. This book turned out to be the best choice for this. It explains the fundamentals and mathematical principals of IAM in a very concise way and therefore delivers timeless answers to the fundamentals of IAM. In addition the author provides some useful examples for the underlying theory of IAM. While I had to brush up on my high school math for some parts of the book I don't think it should be a deterrent for anyone that wants a clear and concise introduction into IAM.I bought the Kindle version of this book and the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is the formatting of the Kindle version. Some of the mathematical formulas are not correctly rendered on the Kindle. For example: Matrices are not displayed correctly with a proper bracket to the left and right, but rather you see some special characters displayed. In addition on some formulas the indices appear too small to read on the Kindle/iPad Kindle app. Labels on the diagrams in this version of the book are also too small. It would be great if the next, revised edition could have an option of zooming into the diagrams. Once these nuisances are fixed I would no doubt give this book five stars.

It is a fake book. Doesn't buy it.
