It might seem pointless to write a review of one of the cornerstones of Christian literature, yet I purchased this particular edition after struggling with the first chapter of the less expensive Kindle edition of the Pusey translation. I am glad I did. The grammar of Augustine's Latin Silver Age easily handles stylistic complexities that are not natural to modern English, and this translation by Henry Chadwick renders Augustine's prose brilliantly. It reveals not so much a saint with a tortured past as a passionate and thoughtful young man sustained and drawn by a love for truth, beauty, and friends on a journey in search of the source of them, which Augustine finds in the God preached by the Catholic faith. Unlike Newman's "Apologia pro Vita Sua," the "Confessions" are not a defense of a life so much as a hymn of praise of the one who led him and gave it meaning. Augustine realizes that nothing was happenstance, but that God walked with him throughout the journey. One could view this story as a journey from alienation to fulfillment, but abstractions sell it short. In many ways, it is a love story in which the protagonist overcomes difficulties to find his true love. In confessing his journey, Augustine reveals an astonishingly modern self-awareness. He understands himself as a person with a personal history, influenced both by social and cultural conditions and inner drives. Readers in our day may well find in him a mentor in their search for meaning in life. This book became a cornerstone of the Western Christian spiritual tradition and remains fundamental reading. I highly recommend this translation.

In the late seventies as I worked on a master’s degree in agricultural economics, my best friend, who had just entered seminary, encouraged me to undertake study of classics in the faith and early on I read Augustine’s (1978) Confessions. The Confessions proved to be a challenging read both because of my lack of seminary training and because of the old English translation. When I undertook this year to write my own memoir, my friend encouraged me to return to the Confessions both because the Confessions provided a template for all memoirs to follow and because this time I also had seminary training.Convinced of the wisdom to return to the Confessions, I sought a more modern translation that would be easier to read and, to my delight, found a translation by E.J. Sheed with an introduction by Augustinian biographer, Peter Brown. Brown (2000) is revered as one of the leading Augustinian biographers of our time and I had used his biography during my days in seminary.I break this review up into four parts. In the first part, I give an overview of the Confessions and why we are interested. In the second part, I review the life of Augustine and sin, as he describes it. In the third part, I will focus on Augustine’s coming to faith. And, in the fourth part, I will review his theological writings, which focus on the creation accounts in Genesis.Background on AugustineFor those unfamiliar with church history, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) , which was in modern-day Algeria, lived right after the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Bishop Ambrose baptized Augustine who had such contemporaries as Jerome, who translated the Bible in Latin. The fourth century posed a heady time for the Christian church and Augustine’s theology influenced much of what followed. For example, Martin Luther (1483-1546), a leader in the reformation more than a thousand years later, was an Augustinian monk (Bainton 1995, 25).Of contemporary significance is the point that Augustine hailed from Africa where some of the best theology and early Bible manuscripts were copied. African scholarship dominated the early church and this dominance continued until the Islamic invasion in the sixth century, following the life and work of Mohammad (570-632 AD). The statement that Christianity is a “white man’s religion” (widely touted in developing countries) is not historically accurate and denigrates the significant contribution of African scholarship to the early church.What Are the Confessions?Augustine came to Christ as an adult. In his introduction, Peter Brown writes:“On Easter day, April 24th, 387, he [Augustine] had ‘put on Christ’ by receiving baptism at the hands of Ambrose.” (xv)Shortly before the death of his mother, Monica, who was a devout Catholic, later that year. Augustine supported himself teaching rhetoric, was heavily influenced by the writings of Plato, and wrote the Confessions to be read aloud. Each of the thirteen books could be read in about an hour’s time (xvi-xviii). Brown writes:“For, as Catholic bishop, Augustine did not simply know ‘about’ the Bible, or preach ‘on’ the Bible. He prayed out of it every day, using especially the book of Psalms, which he believed to be the direct, personal prayers of King David, and so the model of all Christan, as they had been of all Jewish, prayer.” (xvii-xviii)The influence of the Bible on the confessions is obvious to any reader because Augustine frequently begins a particular section in prayer and cites scripture throughout, allusions to which the editor has conveniently footnoted.Less obvious to the reader is the definition that Augustine used for confession. As noted by the editor’s glossary, for Augustine confession could be:1. a profession of faith,2. praise of God, or3. an act of penance (self-accusation).Today, we primarily assume the last definition (329).In his book, Confessions, Augustine of Hippo describes his life before and after converting to Christianity as an adult. Augustine shamelessly lays out the sins of his life, saying:“Let the mind of my brethren love that in me which You teach to be worthy of love, and grieve for that in me which You teach to be worthy of grief.” (191)I take this statement to mean that Augustine proposes to be frankly forthright in confession so that he can be an example to others. Is it any wonder that people trusted him and followed him into the monastic life? Having read the Confessions as a young man, I truly believe that they helped lead me to live ascetic lifestyle, even after it was no longer a financial necessity. There is no need to discuss the mercy, wisdom and beauty of Augustine's "Confessions", a classic treatise on the human condition, the source of sorrows and joys.Having read several translations with my favorite being worn out, I replaced it with this translation hoping for the best. The translation exceeded my expectations bringing me new and fresher understanding of Augustine's theological thoughts and my own situation.I am a simple lay person, not scholarly; I know there is much more to be gleaned from this wonderful translation and will keep at it. What I especially enjoyed are the footnotes that refer the reader to the scriptures that reflect Augustine's words, fleshing out a deeper, more practical meaning to the scriptures contextualized with everyday life. This is the area I want to follow up more thoroughly and diligently.The book binding is good for me as the inner margin seems slightly bigger than most paperback books easing the usual tendency of having to read on the curve of a book. A silly little thing that makes reflective reading better somehow.I agree with the translators decisions to keep some of the " Thee's" and "Thou's' to convey Augustine's use of the words when they express his personal intimacy with God as distinguished from generalized concepts of God. They draw me in to greater reverence and understanding.

I got the first book of this series for free. I found it on bookbub.com and it looked like something my daughter would like. It sat in my cloud forever before i finally decided to read it, then quickly found myself buying the next few books. I used all my xmas money for the ones i didnt have.I find this girl relatable in a few ways, thankfully not all of them.The few months that happen in the books have been very well thought out. Everybody grows at a pace that just feels for them.The situations are great, and because i had no real time between books, to me feels seamless. This could easily be a soap opera or web comic. I think i know who volto is amd hate waiting to find out.This whole series is great, it looks like number 11 is a little behind schedule

First Kiss is my favorite of the series so far. I do have to say however, there have been editing problems since book 1, but they were ridiculous in this book. Readers have to be forgiving of so many typos.Christmas lived up to my hopes. Gift-wrapping, on-line shopping, stolen kisses, Christmas day itself. I enjoyed it all. It was so nice to step outside the school. The camping was a nice change too. I was disappointed with how little time Sang and the boys were together, but it made sense. I loved each interaction we did get with them. I switch favorites every page. One minute it's North or Silas, the next Victor, then Kota.....This book finally starts Sang moving forward. She's introduced to the Academy. As much as she wants to be in the Academy, she is so scared. More than anything she wants to be with her team and she's going to have to fight for them. She shows strength we haven't seen before, and then increased vulnerability. Her PTSD is addressed during this time and handled in a creative and perfect way. There's finally some screw ups by the boys. Before this they were seeming a bit too good to be real. Actual jealousy problems surface, voices are raised, doubts expressed. About time! I have wanted complete team communication for a while now. I only wish everyone had been present.This book ended with a cliffhanger that does not bode well for Sang, and the boys are all in a bad way. Sang has to be close to her total breaking point. I read all 9 of these books together and now for the first time I have to wait for the next one. I am looking forward to it since we seem to be picking up steam.

This was my first time reading a RH book. I'm glad it was this series because these are sweet, romantic but not over the top books. I fell in love with each of the guys and could easily see how Sang did too. Though for me I would have ended up having to pick one. (Couldn't get enough of North!) I guess if I had to say one negative it would be that I didn't feel like all the guys were given equal time, she spends more time with some than she does others and I feel like the reader doesn't get to know that guy as well. Even though they each have their own book where Sang spends time with them after that some of them drift to the background in the other books. All in all this is a great introduction into the RH genre.

I originally wasn't going to write a review, but dang, all the people hating on Lake got me peeved.Yes, there is a boy who prefers dressing up as a girl in the book. No, it's not super super in your face and I wouldn't call it soapboxing just because Sang was being her usual sensitive and lovely self about being nice to a fellow human being and caring about what they needed. Yes, there are other people in the world who deal with s*** that some of us have the privilege of ignoring - mentioning it actually makes for a more rounded story. I don't think I've seen any Asian Americans or African Americans or Latinxs in the books, so it's really nice to actually see some diversity.Now that, what I just did there? That's soapboxing, for y'all intolerant people.Back to the book.It ends on a cliffhanger, which I honestly didn't appreciate. I felt that it was a clear attention grab, which was annoying because it wasn't like the story couldn't have ended "for now" after what happened with the Academy and on a high note. If the book is good (which it is), then let it shine on its own merits. Using a cliffhanger is just obnoxious, and that's why this is a three star rather than a four star.However, I feel like in this book we're finally getting some traction. She's finally met the Academy people and her status has been made more or less certain, which is great. The shower thing finally gets resolved, which, yes, awesome. Also, there's finally some screw ups by the boys. Prior to this, honestly, they were seeming a bit too good to be realistic. But now, we've got actual major jealousy problems, there's the boys acting human (yes, thank goodness), and being more the teens they should be rather than the super perfect paragons they were assumed to be. All very awesome.Yes, very little to do with "real world stuff" like Hendricks, her mom, her dad, Volto, etc, gets resolved in this book, but much as I bemoan that fact, the pacing actually mostly works for what's going on in this book. Stuff could have been condensed or cut, but mostly it does work. People get introduced, we get a better idea of how the Academy functions, and we're given some good ideas of how well (or not) Sang is going to do. Suffice to say that Sang's issues are many and it's clear they're going to be stumbling blocks at some point. (yes, more than they are now)Another thing is - I used to be very on board with the reverse harem idea, but the more we move in, the more I feel like nine is just way too many. Considering how Stone pulled off Sang's thing with the academy, I have faith that she might be able to make it work, but yes, it's probably going to be many many many books in the future, but still. I almost feel like it would be easier if some of the boys were into each other, to take some of the pressure off of Sang...I'll probably stick along for another book, but if it's another cliffhanger or if things keep taking so long to resolve, I might duck out. I didn't sign on for a 25+ book series. All things made more difficult that Stone doesn't have a finished series so I can have reassurance that she can tie up a series in a way that I like.

One of my favorite reads of the Ghost Bird series yet!Sang & her lovely team of guys go camping with the Academy for the entire book! Sang learns a lot about what it takes to be in the Academy and how Academy life can truly be, the camping trip is all about interacting and learning and possibly joining the Academy in the near future. It starts out adventurous and fun and gradually turns into extremely emotional and nerve wrecking, but as with any puzzle we slowly fit the pieces together. I'll admit this book was one of the more emotional ones and had me crying immensely.I truly feel for Sang and I can somewhat relate to her in many ways. She is truly remarkable and has come a long way, she deals with so much and tries to put everyone in her team first even if it bothers her to do so. She's such a brave loving and caring young woman I truly admire her!

Having lived in Sub-Saharan Africa myself (although not engaging in activities nearly as adrenalin-producing as the author), I eagerly picked up this memoir. The book was not what I had hoped for. If there's such a genre as "chick lit," then this would be what I would call "dick lit."Basically a reporter who's fallen in love with Africa goes there to work, cheats on his partner a lot, writes awkward scene after scene about sex, and gets kidnapped and encounters some pretty dangerous conditions..then has a family. Intermittent reflections on some deeper questions about life and about his place in Africa get minimal consideration. Author made this potentially very compelling topic and story read more like an extended Cosmo article than a serious piece of writing.

Having traveled extensively in Africa, I looked forward to this book. I put it down with very mixed feelings. I admire him as a journalist and he tells compellingly of the thrills and dangers of working in Africa. However, I found him repulsive as a personality. His cheating and refusal to come clean until she found his emails and his chauvinistic attitude about the importance of her work disgusted me and outweighed my appreciation for his journalistic competence.

I've followed Gettleman's work for years, so am quite surprised at how much I disliked this book, both in style and in substance. He comes off as selfish and self-indulgent, repeatedly willing to put his own needs and humanity above those of others. Lightweight misogyny and a really conflicted view of Africa and its people are glossed over. Little reference is made to the many, many talented and insightful African writers whose opinions could have - SHOULD have - helped shape the book; there are few Africans on the list of readers and acknowledgements. This is unsurprising, given that most of the Africans I've known/read would have rightly objected to the frequent use of, for example, the term "ooga booga" - the text is a giveaway that not many African opinions were considered. For a man who's lived in that part of the world for so long, and who purports to write on it with authority, there is a pretty clear lack of reflection or cultural awareness.Stylistically, there are some jarringly crude moments that stand out as both tacky and unsuited to the weight of the material; for the amount of time Gettleman spends complaining about editors, he could have used some more help on that end.Before you buy, check out the review in the New York Times book review.

I have lived in Africa and resonate with the spirit of this book -- love and grave concern. Gettleman, New York Times correspondent in East Africa, knows and loves Africa -- and grew to know it on its own terms. Reading it, I was reminded again about how terrible war is, how cruel people can be to each other, and how difficult it is to create a sense of nation that can help people rise about historical grievances, local identities, fears, and greed for power. He chronicles his history with Africa, his path into journalism, and his complex -- often long distance - relationship with his wife who became his partner in extremely dangerous journalistic forays.Read this as a love story -- personal and of Africa; as a recent history of many African (East) countries; as an adventure tale; as a peek into what it means to be a journalist in dangerous and complex parts of the world; as a story about a career in journalism and about finding and focusing your passion. And read it as just a really good read! 5 stars for sure.

Gettleman's insights into reporters and reporting fill the book. How he came to be a reporter shows there are varied paths in to journalism outside of J-school. The first lesson is that the key of a reporter’s success is based on the transitive property of trust between reporters. It a useful lesson- your friend is my friend and I may have to trust his friends (sources) with my life. And a continued emphasis on accurate note taking during reporting and interviewing is to be taken to heart. His firsthand accounts of life at the New York Times are as fun as the nuts and bolts of writing and office politics stories of his first reporting job with the much smaller St. Petersburg Times.The descriptions of places are rich in detail. For me the one of the best was of a chaotic bus station in Africa (if you watched SENSE8 you will have a better appreciation for its realism after this read). This is not the Port Authority. The humor of sneaking up a mountain to avoid the cost of a hiking permit was chilling fun. Everything moved the book along – from the personal details to the professional accomplishments. There are many tactile descriptions of places and emotions -danger, excitement, anticipation; joy- the best travelog takes you along for the ride. From his student days at Cornell where you can smell the paint of a summer jobs to degradation of Ethiopian military prison cells you felt you were riding along side Gettleman.The book is revealing and honest in terms of 'love and romance.' His personal life is carefully and intimately woven into his story which in turn is woven into assorted political situations in a way that carries the reader along.His partner in the Africa bureau is his wife, a lawyer turned photographer for the relocation from the States. Courtenay is the book’s co-star (no doubt in the movie the lone star). She is painted as forgiving, erudite, loving and patient, in contrast to Gettleman’s impetuous risk taking style.Gettleman’s "Love, Africa: A Memoir of Romance, War, and Survival" borders on a bildungsroman, often a confessional, at times a tempting travelogue, frequently a foreign relations class, with African cultural and political lessons insights. He covers range topics. The reader visits places few go, even in fiction: from spaghetti with Somali Pirates to a meeting of Pedophiles Anonymous in Florida.Overall Gettleman is living his dream.The best Laugh line from the youngish reporter: "Being thirty is one thing, being forty another."Disclosure: I worked at the LA Times in Chicago and had occasion to work with Gettleman.

I don't normally write a lot of product reviews , however after finishing this extraordinary book I really don't have a choice. First off, I've read numerous real life accounts of men's time in the military. I have come to expect these stories to be different versions of the same story with perhaps a few personal wrinkles added in. What sets this book apart is the authors courage to let us inside his psyche as he bears his vulnerability, strained allegiences, and own moral character as he leads these men into battle. The units dynamics as laid out in clear, concise, stages for all to see. The author does a truly professional job of letting know how irratating many of the platoons internal and external challenges were without ever losing site of his overall responsibility to lead his men professionally. I was amazed by his ability to not give in to more immediate primal instinct for revenge in lieu of the long term physcological scars his men would had to have endured. Not simply a recounting of military skirmishes but a commentary on who we are .

As a member of Outlaw Platoon, I can not stress enough the importance of this book to our nation's forgotten infantry soldiers. Outlaw Platoon is an honest and compelling account of life and death in the trenches and does true justice to our combat experience.As you read this post, there are thousands of men on battlefields around the world killing and suffering for the preservation of American ideals. As a civilized society and beneficiaries of our nation's might, we must meet their sacrifices with unwavering support. I was an infantry medic in Vietnam where I lost my right leg. The courage and fortitude of these men totally amazed me. The book gives me a window into the world of our modern military. I can see many changes and a multitude of differences, but it is all same same. We fight, give our all. Those of us who survive come home continue to fight and spend the rest of our lives surviving.We had a small black mutt, Sam, who walked point with our company. He found many caches of weapons and supplies. He also once triggered an ambush early saving many lives. He was one of two casualties. The other was a platoon leader with a wound to the shoulder. Sent them both back on a medical chopper. Sam was later poisoned.PS hope someone shot mail bitch.

This book is not a book that let's you read about what war is like, this is a book that puts you in the middle of every battle with the bullets flying past you and the explosions rocking the world around you. You are there with the guys that experienced it all. You get to experience the real meaning of courage, the meaning of being your brother`s keeper, the meaning of giving your all and until you have nothing left, then giving even more. Anyone that wants to understand what being part of something greater than yourself needs to read this book. Anyone that wants to know the true meaning of courage needs to read this book. The men of this book are truly the best of the best. They deserve to be honored. Not only for their service, but more importanrly, for showing what it means to be men courage and honor.

About the Author

Theodore Fontaine attended the Fort Alexander and the Assiniboia Indian residential schools from 1948 to 1960. A past chief of Manitoba's Sagkeeng First Nation, he has worked in various government departments, as executive director of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, and as Strategic Advisor to the Chiefs on Indian residential school issues. He now chairs the Indigenous Leadership Development Institute.

This is a memoir, and some of what it tells is happy and idyllic. Other parts are sad and just a downright disgrace, yet another blot on both the Canadian and the American past. It's well written and poignant, especially the school memories, which seem to be sharp fragments, all the author can fish out of of his memory concerning the harsh, frightening, and often degrading experiences to which he was subjected. So hard to believe that anyone-could imagine that this policy of removing of the vulnerable young from their families was the "right" or "civilized" thing to do! I'm encouraged that Chief Fontaine was able to share this personal story with the world. That he eventually put the bits and pieces of his self-esteem back together and then went forth in new found strength to work for justice for his tribe is a monument to the intelligence and endurance of 1st Nation's people everywhere.

A powerful and courageous memoir of the hell inflicted upon indigenous peoples and sexual abuse perpetrated by the Catholic Church. A story of survival. I hoe the US can someday find the courage to right the wrongs of our ancestors.

There are not may books that I've read about surviving the boarding school experience. This book was written by a Canadian survivor. I am an Alaskan Eskimo who went to boarding school in Alaska. It answered a few of my own questions why I feel the way I do as an indigenous person. The book was well-written. I will recommend this book to those who have their own struggles coming to grips with their experience away from their families and communities growing up.

I would recommend this book to anyone that has suffered any form of abuse in their life. This has allowed me to begin my journey of healing. Thank you for that Mr. Fontaine.

I first checked this book out at my local library out of curiosity, since some of my family members, including me are autistic. I was hesitant that it might be a hard read or a boring read. What a surprise! This book is riveting! I immediately ordered myself a copy and am still reading it. Since that time, I have purchased another copy to pass around my family so I can keep my own copy at home. Great book. Well researched. This is a book that I will value for a long, long time.

As a mom to a child with autism, this was a much needed read. It didn't teach me much about my daughter (except that her impressive indifference to cold is apparently part of her autism). But it gave me a whole lot of perspective, and filled me with gratitude - for all the people who worked so hard to get to where we are today, where a diagnosis leads to services rather than blame and institutionalization. What individual parents were able to accomplish is so inspiring, it has me reevaluating what more I could be doing. The book was well written and drew me in quickly. Somewhere after the first 300 pages it became a little slower, but there was always enough to keep me reading and I'm very glad I did.

I gave this book five stars because it not only did a great job of giving a chronological history of the disorder, but of also making it a personal story that many people can relate or empathize with. Many people I know do not fully realize what autism is, and usually have ideas about it that are not completely true. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about the disorder or who are directly involved with it (those who have autism, parents of autistic individuals, and therapists that work with autistic people).

This book was not always easy to read, as some of the history was disturbing, but I learned so much about how we have gotten to where we are now. As with many new medical conditions there is a lot of trial and error to go through before figuring out just what you're dealing with. There were so many heroes along the way sacrificing so much to get their story told so that people would know about what life was like for the families affected by autism. I appreciated the time line at the end to help put all the characters and events into chronological order to serve as a review.

Having an autistic son who is diagnosed as an Asperger's I was very interested in this book and what it had to say of the spectrum. Many of the people talked about in the book I had read about or had read what they had written but it was good to read the comparisons of the different groups. It would be very helpful to all parents if there was one place where all of the information could be found instead being so disjointed.

Very informative. It brings to life the reality of Autism in a truly readable, interesting way. I learned a lot. Living with a child with autism born in the early 80's and having to research and find someone to help me figure out how to help her, I can tell you this book has given me a lot of understanding about the struggles that I was not aware of.

I have a son-in-law who is autistic. This book has been so helpful in understanding how to help him during visits to our home. It also makes me appreciate how hard it is for him to get out of the comfort of his home. He truly is quite brave!

This is an extraordinary book. John Donvan is a television correspondent for ABC, and Caren Zucker is a journalist and producer. Together, they have dug deep into the history of autism – from an unknown psychiatric disorder to a diagnosis climbing from 4 to 5 cases per 10,000 people in 1966 to approximately 1 per 100 today. Donvan and Zucker tell the story of autism in 46 fast-paced chapters, presenting detailed accounts of the biographies of the characters: parents, children, psychologists, physicians, advocates and more --- each viewed as if seen through a hand held camera. When a child in a family is not right, the whole family suffers.Such was the case when Donald who was born in 1933 to affluent parents in Forest, Mississippi.Donald was an odd child:When he was seven, an examiner asked him a question for the Binet-Simon IQ test. If I were to buy four cents’ worth of candy and give the storekeeper ten cents, how much would I get back? I’ll draw a hexagon, Donald replied….He showed scant interest in the inhabitants of the outside world, and that included his parents. Of all his peculiarities, this was the most difficult for them to accept – that he never ran to his father when he came home from work, and that he almost never cried for his mother. Relatives were unable to engage him…Oblivious to those around him, he would turn violent the instant his activities were interrupted…it became clear he was protecting sameness. Mary Triplett, Donald’s mother concluded that he was hopelessly insane, before the diagnosis of autism was invented. Her husband, Oliver, a lawyer, was known as Beamon to everyone, and was the former mayor’s son. Their doctor advised them that they had overstimulated Donald and he should be placed in an institution.During the first half of the twentieth century, children like Donald were called a string of derogatory labels:Cretin, ignoramus, simpleton, maniac, lunatic, dullard, dunce, demented, derange, schizoid, spastic, feebleminded, and psychotic. Even in Dr. Benjamin Spock’s (1903 – 1998), “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care,” first published in 1946, he recommended that parents immediately place a Mongolian baby in an institution.For families like Donald’s, sending their child to an institution far from their home created shame, guilt, sorrow, confusion and loss:They sent away their children in secret, and in time, the children themselves became secrets, never to be spoken of again. Mr. and Mrs. Triplett brought Donald back home from the institution and took him to be evaluated by the eminent child psychiatrist Leo Kanner (pronounced “Kahner”; 1894 - 1981) at Johns Hopkins hospital in Maryland.Donald was case number 1 in Kanner’s major work published in 1943, “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact.” Dr. Kanner studied eleven cases, 3 girls and 8 boys, he later called autism. ”It was Kanner who identified the two defining traits common to all of them: the extreme preference for aloneness and the extreme need for sameness.” Donald is now 82 years old. The first time I evaluated an autistic child in the 1970s, I met two warm, loving, guilt-ridden parents telling me through their tears about their unresponsive, odd five year old child who didn’t talk and was obsessed with playing with door knobs and hinges. When this child entered my office, he walked past me as if I wasn’t there and went straight to the curtain and began sucking the on the cloth. I was aware that blaming mothers for causing autism --- and other psychiatric disorders --- was the theory many clinicians studied to diagnose and treat autistic children. Bruno Bettelheim (1903 – 1990), a prominent child psychologist, who had a Ph.D. in art history, was a famous clinician who promoted that theory. He wrote and lectured that “refrigerator mothers” raised their children in a climate of emotional frigidity causing autism. Bettelheim recommended a “parentectomy”, taking these autistic children away from their parents and putting them in a therapeutic milieu. Bettelheim founded the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago as a residential treatment program. I couldn’t square my subsequent many encounters with autistic kids and their parents with the refrigerator mother theory expressed in Bettelheim’s famous book The Empty Fortress. My doubts about this blame the mother theory of autism were reinforced in a yearlong seminar taught by Fritz Redl, a contemporary of Bettelheim, and a brilliant teacher and writer. In this seminar of 8 students, 3 of the students had worked for Bettelheim, whose nickname they said was Bruno Brutalheim --- because of how he treated staff, children and parents. In 1990 Bettelheim committed suicide, his method placing a plastic bag over his head. My thought was he recognized the monstrous damage he inflicted on children and their families with his cockamamie theory and treatment approach to autism. But who can know for sure. Donvan and Zucker uncover the stories of courageous characters who fought against the blame theory of autism. Scientists, sometimes with an autistic child of their own, and parents of autistic kids worked tirelessly to get kids out of institutions, band together to make the education establishment teach autistic kids in public schools, find behavioral treatments that worked, and more.The media did much to broadcast and humanize the life of autistic people For example, the brilliant movie “Rain Main’ told the sensitive story about an autistic man starring Dustin Hoffman (1937 - ); Temple Grandin (1947 - ), the first celebrity autistic adult with a Ph.D. in biological sciences and a professor of animal sciences at Colorado State University wrote best-selling books about growing up with autism and lectures around the world.. A movie about the life of Temple Grandin garnered rave reviews, starring Claire Danes (1979 - ). Oliver Sacks (1933 – 2015), the brilliant neurologist, wrote a book of essays called, “Anthropologist on Mars,” with the title referring to his chapter on Temple Grandin. Along the way there were many missteps among autistic advocacy groups and scientific findings:It was an early harbinger of the tragic tendency of autism advocacy groups, or individuals in them, all supposedly dedicated to the same cause, to turn against one another. It had been there at the beginning, and it would flare up, again and again, to the detriment of the greater cause, in every decade to follow. In 1998, a British physician published a shocking paper in the well-respected Lancet journal claiming that the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine may cause autism. The study was eventually discredited, the physician lost his license, but not without significant panic in the community about the safety of giving children vaccines. Many educated people stopped giving their children the MMR vaccines and “measles was becoming active again the United States, with reported infections reaching a twenty –year high in 2014.” Whether we are witnessing a true increase in the autistic population, or whether the definition of autism on a spectrum makes the difference in numbers remains controversial. Because we know so little about the complex etiology of autism, crank, expensive treatments masquerading as science promising quick cures lurk at the doors of progress, waiting to lure parents down the road of danger psychiatric misadventures. Advocacy for autistic children and adults is essential and must be driven by scientists.
