If you read the first book "Growing Up Puertorican" about the author's early childhood in rural Puerto Rico and liked it (I loved it) you will enjoy Santiago's second book as much. It's about her family coming to the United States and her high school years in Brooklyn, NY. Her writing is warm and interesting and worth reading. You learn to really understand and care for the young girl growing up in a new and totally different environment.

Wow.. I thought I had a strict upbringing.. Esmeralda's takes the cake. This memoir picks up where "When I Was Puerto Rican" stops (well, the first chapter or 2 basically repeats the end of the first book for those that did not read it) and covers her teenage years. She had a mother that bore eleven children and never married, but was apparently so concerned that her daughter not follow her example, she did not let Esmeralda date and kept her on a very short leash. Esmeralda finds ways around it tho like any spunky rebellious teenager. I found parts of it engrossing. I felt embarassed with her during the retelling of her Mami showing up at a party simply because she forgot to call. However, I did not find this one as humorous as "When I Was Puerto Rican". I also do not care to read an entire novel about the Turkish guy she meets at the end, which the next novel covers. Basically what I am trying to say, is that unlike "When I Was Puerto Rican," this memoir, although good, does not make me want to keep reading. However, I am going to read the next one just to find out if Esmeralda ever asked her mother "Mami, why do you not use birth control?" I am dying for the answer at this point.

Well written, Brings me back home to my days growing up in the streets of New York City. This book is one each Puerto Rican should read. Came on time and love the way it looks. Can wait to get started on it. My wife and I are both, trying to read it so I guess I'll have to read it after her. Anyway a good buy. Thanks

I enjoyed reading about Brooklyn, where I grew up. The characters were familiar to me and I identified with them. The main character was very genuine and likable. The only thing I didn't like was the abrupt ending. I look forward to the sequel.

Even better than her first book When I Was Puertorican. I couldn't put this book down. Esmeralda Santiago does such an amazing job at having you relive her life with her that you almost think you have lol. Can't wait to download her third book Turkish Lover.

I already have this book. I bought this book, 1 of 3 from Santiago, as a Christmas gift trilogy for my sister to read and pass on to my niece as a right of passage as a Latina.

I first read this book to my 6th grade class in 1963. They loved it! I have recommended it to several reading groups. Jean Pierre Hallet made a life long impression on me with his autobiography.

Finishes out my collection of his books.

I truly believe this book should be included in the teaching of black history, even though it is written as an autobiaraphy.

Jean-Pierre Hallet was an amazing man and larger then life adventurer. He confronted the realities of life in the Belgian Congo in the 1950s and 60s with courage, fascination and reforming zeal. He tells his story with remarkable frankness to the point where there many occasions that I wondered whether this was all for real. He confronted racist colonial administrators, suspicious revolutionaries and leopards with the same steely gaze and sang froid. He earned the trust of local communities who had experienced the roughest treatment of colonialists, but who respected his deep humanity and courage. This simply extra-ordinary book will remain in my mind for a long, long time.

The exploits of this man were almost superhuman. His ability to step inside the heads of tribesmen and a wide variety of animals is astounding and insightful. He provides insight into African mindsets and culture I'm still processing. I'd call this a must read if you are interested in exceptional exploits or wish for insight into African cultures.

This is an absolutely knockout true-life adventure in Africa. Jean-Pierre Hallet tells of 12 action-packed years among the tribes of Africa. He became blood-brother to the tall "Watusi" and the warrior Masai, joined the Bwane Secret Society, lived among cannibals, and went on to share the life of the Congo Pygmies. Hallet was taught the art of killing a lion with a spear by the Masai. Does he succeed? You'll have to read the book to find out. One of the great African adventure books told by a man who lived an incredible life. First Hardcover version was 1964.

" I asked."No it was brain surgery," he said. "That steel plate sets off metal detectors."And so it was with interest I picked up Duped, hoping to find out what makes people like Lucy and Ellin's Commander tick. Abby Ellin writes in a breezy, self-deprecating style. (She'd have to - she almost married a guy who told her on their first date that he'd examined Osama Bin Laden at Gitmo and even the President didn't know he'd been captured. Super secret - shhhhhhhh.) With an extensive list of footnoted sources, Ellin has compiled a collection of dupers and dupees and quotes various psychologists on why some people like to lie.Maybe there's not one, but it bothered me a bit that Ellin seems to make little distinction between self-aggrandizing fabulists like the Commander and adulterers, embezzlers and fugitives. I get why people lie not to get caught at something, although the scale of deception in some of her anecdotes is truly mind-boggling. I wanted insights into the people who make up stuff just because. She's also more sympathetic to liars like eco-terrorist Peter Young and double agent Kim Philby than I would be. "Oh to have such loyalty to a cause greater than myself!" (p 56, ARC). She never once mentions the hundreds of people killed thanks to Philby's information. Later in the book she talks about the PTSD suffered by Bernie Madoff's victims, but couches it in terms of an emotional response to betrayal (many of them were "Jewish, like Madoff") rather than the shattering of their financial stability. Both of those omissions are books on their own, but the lack of acknowledgement rankled.The book touches briefly on people who lie about their gender or gender preferences, which leads to a discussion about blaming the dupe. There's a chapter on women liars, and the book wraps up with a look at the dubious usefulness of polygraphs. A few casual digs at Republicans and the Trump administration are scattered as humor and will ultimately date the book. Overall I'd been hoping for more psychology and fewer anecdotes.

Ellin’s depiction of her former fiancé was such that I expected him to don a cape at their first meeting. Words like “swashbuckling rogue” immediately sprang to mind. Any man who mentions “secret missions” and the CIA, while spouting off the names of his famous alleged acquaintances, sounds suspicious and more like a boastful kid playing spy than a potential mate. Perhaps he was charming and convincing, but there were so many red flags here. Ellin seemed caught up in the whirlwind, drama and excitement, blithely excusing the lies and discrepancies. A rapid romance with all the right words and props, but little substance or reality. Effusive declarations of adoration too soon, then expectations quickly set low by small disappointments and evasions. Easier to see and say from a distance, than when in the midst of it, but love takes time to develop. The speed of the courtship alone was reason enough for legitimate concern. The “Commander” engineered a relationship with all the requisite trappings, but I just envisioned him onstage, acting out scenes in a sweeping emotional saga where he was the quintessential star, at least in his own mind. When Ellin finally realized his deliberate trickery, and the clouds cleared, her book then becomes more about the history of deception, why people opt to deceive and how to spot these stealthy perpetrators. Interesting research and interviews in this portion of the book. No one is immune to deception, and Ellin’s story describes the havoc and bewilderment that duplicity can render. Women are particularly vulnerable as we are often steeped in stubborn fairytales, when common sense, facts and discernment are required. A good read.

Abby Ellin tells such a riveting story of being duped, you won't be able to put her new book down. What I love is she doesn't blame and shame. When a woman is conned, everyone blames the victim. But Ellin doesn't. She tackles the trauma of being duped with empathy. This isn't just her story; she uses her reporting chops to tell other people's stories too, including that of double agent Kim Philby's treachery. I gobbled it up.

Even if you've never been duped, you've got to wonder about what motivates those conmen and why anyone would fall for their antics. Well, wonder no more. This is no con when i tell you that Ellin is a witty and smart writer. You'll be gripped by the narrative and intrigued by the science of it all.

I hate to leave any negative review, but this book seemed to me to be disjointed and poorly written. I was fascinated by the story when I heard the author's interview on NPR and was wanting to hear the whole story so I bought the book both hardback and ebook so I could start reading right away. After reading the first 50 pages or so, I felt like she had written her memoir out and an editor asked her to add more history from her life, so the story lops back and forth awkwardly in an unnatural and forced way. I shared this book with a close family member who worked for the DEA thinking that she would enjoy the story and theme, but she called me and said the same thing! She wanted to love it, but found it disjointed and not very well written. I love non fiction, and this is just my opinion, I just wish it lived up to my expectations. I'm still happy that the author took the time to share her experience and expose the commander in hopes of helping other women in the same situation.

This book provides an overview of the cruise industry and if you have never cruised before, you will find some interesting information. However, the book is outdated and at times the information is not very accurate. Below are some examples:1. Rick states "most cruise lines allow passengers to light up in their staterooms or on their verandas..." Not true. Most cruise lines(at least the ones I have been on) do not allow you to smoke anywhere on the ship except for in designated smoking areas (typically outside on a portion of a deck) and I would certainly check with your cruise line before you light up anywhere onboard.2. Internet access is expensive and slow and not worth the cost. While it is true that internet access is pricey, many cruise companies are upgrading their satellite service to provide better internet service. We recently cruised across the Atlantic and paid for an unlimited internet package and had no issues accessing the internet. We were even able to Facetime with family from the middle of the Atlantic ocean. At times, particularly during peak hours, speeds were a bit slower but in general we had no issues accessing the internet and found the price we paid well worth it for having the ability to communicate with family. And I would much rather access the internet on a relatively secure ship portal rather than at a free internet cafe.3. Rick is also quite negative when it comes to shore excursions, preferring to visit the sites independently. But after reading some of his suggestions on how to get from the ship to the points of interest -- hike a mile, take a bus to the train, take a 45 minute train ride into town, then hike another mile to the sites -- left me exhausted just reading about. Yes, shore excursions can be more expensive than doing things on your own but I would rather spend my time exploring the sites than figuring out how to get there. In general I have found most shore excursions to be well managed, informative and a very convenient way to see the sites.4. Also, I take issue with Rick's statement to "beware of crew members' advice" concerning sightseeing . I have never found this to be the case. Most individuals on board cruise ships will bend over backwards to help you, and that also applies to giving you information on what to do in port without taking one of their shore excursions. The objective of most cruise lines is to get you to love cruising and especially to love cruising with their company. If a crew member annoys you by giving you misinformation, how likely are you to book another cruise with that company?

I bought Anne Vipond's "Mediterranean By Cruise Ship" (6th ed.) and Rick Steve's "Mediterranean Cruise Ports" (3rd ed.) in anticipation of my first Mediterranean cruise this coming May. I'm posting the same review on each book's page to compare them, as they present two quite different approaches to preparing for your cruise. At the outset, I emphasize that each book has its merits and shortcomings and I found value in each for different reasons. First I'll give a brief overview of each book, followed by a comparison of the two on some key issues.Overview of Anne Vipond's 6th edition of "Mediterranean by Cruise Ship" (AV):I found AV to be very informative and it was very helpful to actually see some of the attractions and sites on this cruise in brilliant color. It is styled as a "DK Eyewitness" type of book, with rich illustrations, quick facts, and color maps of the major sights and locations. If you're looking for specific details about museums, restaurants, and hotels, this isn't the book for you; in fact, the "DK Eyewitness" series offers more detailed recommendations and information than this book does. But there isn't a "DK Eyewitness Mediterranean Cruise Port" book, so you'd have to buy a separate book for each port to get the same general coverage and attractive glossy color photo layout.This is also a good book for a quick introduction to the Mediterranean region, although in this day and age I can't see how this is an improvement over a thorough Internet search. This introduction is necessarily abbreviated too, as 5,000 years of history have been compressed into fewer than 40 pages. One feature I like is that the port coverage is quite broad and included some (albeit very brief) coverage of some locations not addressed in RS (Tunisia, Sicily, Corsica). Comparing the actual cruise port sections, AV has 251 pages devoted to all of the cruise ports and sites, whereas RS devotes 427 pages to Italy alone; AV's section on Italy is only 69 pages.The content of the cruise port sections is very different too. RS provides a richer and more in depth coverage of the actual things you want to see; AV provides a sweeping overview of the lay of the land, highlighting the attractions. For example, consider how each book handles the most famous major attraction in Florence: The Uffizi Gallery. AV uses only one paragraph (fewer than 100 words) to describe the entire site, whereas RS devotes 21 pages to it, and provides a room by room tour map. That's the level of detail you can find in the RS book for all major sites at these ports of call.Interestingly, although RS has over three times the number of content pages as AV, they both weight about 1.5 pounds! That's because AV uses heavier glossy paper to accommodate the rich illustrations. I am a huge fan of Rick Steves' books. My husband and I enjoy cruising and will try to arrive a few days before we leave in order to explore the town of embarkation on our own. We've used Rick's books for independent touring of London, Barcelona, Rome and Naples and found them to be perfect for our needs. This year we had a 14 day Mediterranean cruise planned for October - I bought this book and it was just what we needed to plan port days on our own in several of the cities we visited. Previously we almost always took a shore excursion. While pricey, we've lucked out with very good tour guides. However we also wanted to go out on our own - to do that backdoor traveling Rick encourages. With Rick's new book we toured Venice (his vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal is excellent), Corfu, Mykonos, Split and Dubrovnik on our own - and we enjoyed every moment! Even if this book results in you buying one less shore excursion, it will have paid for itself. The book is terrific - only one of our ports was not covered (Messina Sicily) but we had already planned on taking one of the ship's shore excursions for that port. Buy this book without hesitation - his recommendations are spot on too when it comes to restaurants, best gelato in town, locations of public WC's, and my particular favorite - his walking tours.

Upon booking our Mediterranean cruise, I hopped onto cruisecritic.com and signed up for the roll call, which already had over 300 posts. The organizer of the roll call always mentioned this book to anyone looking for information on the various ports, so I checked out the 2014 edition from our local library. Found the book to be exactly what I wanted, so I ordered the 2016 edition to take with me on the cruise.

I appreciate the research, the fact finding and the evidence that shows what we, as tribal people have known for centuries: our lives and deaths have little value to most of the dominant society, but when such research and facts are blatantly revealed, there is no place for "justice systems " to continue to ignore the absolute lack of respect and value of the lives of indigenous people who suffer and die without value from the white system of bigotry and hate. This is a hard book to venture through, but worth the affirmation of what we have been saying to the systems of law and order: we are not valued even as human beings.

Razack does an amazing work describing with detail and an enormous amount of cases on how inquiries and inquest into the deaths of Canadian American Indians in custody get controlled by the state or simply ignored. Very little is known and most people do not know about deaths of American Indians in custody. Therefore, this book is a must.
