An interesting and enjoyable read. But it needs a proof read. I'm 95 pages into the book so far and have found at least 3 glaring mistakes so far that anyone knowledgeable in astronomy should have caught. On page 86 it's stated that the planet Uranus is 30 AU distance from the sun. In Reality Uranus is around 19 AU and Neptune is at 30 AU. On page 91 is states that the Apollo missions gave us the 1st opportunity to see earth from 240 million miles. Actually that would have been 240 thousand miles. A 3rd one I found earlier but forgot to bookmark. Because of these I gave it a 4 star rating.

This is definitely a great introduction to genetics. It covers every aspect in this field such as the Mendel's Rules, why we have different blood types, Punnet tables, dominant and recessive genes, the role of mutations, the production of proteins using bacteria and genetically modified animals that are proteins factories for Human use, such as insuline, and much more. I thought I had a decent knowledge of genetics but now I feel more confident about it and this book really provide the right knowledge to be up-to-date in this fascinating and complex topic.

Well written and entertaining. Perfect for those who love science but aren't scientists. I learned a lot about this very interesting subject. We humans think we're so special but in the big picture the term insignificant comes to mind.

I purchased this book for my brother and he said that this book was very informative. It has all of the different theories on genes. It is worth the money I paid for it and the shipping was very fast!

I picked up this book after taking an online course (intro to astronomy) taught by the author. If you are interested to learn about near complete catalog of unmaned missions, and what we have learned from each, I would recommend a purchase. The author does a great job of using everyday language to explain some pretty high level concepts.

This was a very informative book, it contained detailed information on many different areas. The one issue that i have, was that the tables were very small and i could no effectively zoom in on them on my kindle. but it was an overall great book

My dad has always been kind of an amateur naturalist, and he has recently been reading several of the various books by Richard Dawkins. As a biochemist working in the biotech industry, I have always encouraged him to read a little bit about molecular biology and genetics, field which I believe are important to learn about in order to gain a more complete understanding of how life really works. Recently, he asked me if I could recomend a good book on the subject of genetics. I found this quest not particularly easy. There are many excellent textbooks on genetics out there, but these are not really what I would call "armchair reading." Of course any college general biology textbook will have an excellent discussion of genetics and molecular biology - but again, too hard-core. One excellent book on genetics is the "Cartoon Guide to Genetics" by Larry Gonick and Mark Wheelis, but this book was written in 1991 and is now hopelessly out of date for this rapidly advancing field. Then there is "Genetics for Dummies," but I thought the title of this book would be a bit insulting potentially. Anyway - I came across this book by Charlotte Omoto and Paul F. Lurquin. I would encourage anyone interesting in biology and genetics to pick up a copy of this extremely well-written little book. I think this book is absolutely perfect. It starts out with a short introduction on the history of the discovery of DNA, then goes into an introduction to basic genetics concepts, such as the use of the Punnett square predict genetic outcomes, recessive vs. dominant traits, sex-linked traits, etc. It gives lots of very nice examples of Mendalian traits in humans. In chapter 4, there is a very nice discussion of the molecular biology of genetics - which is such a beautiful theory that it is a shame that most people don't know much about it. Chapter 5 goes into the use of bacteria to make human proteins - an extremely important part of modern molecular biology research. Chapter 6 has a discussion about genetically modified foods. Chapters 7,8, and 9 discuss chromosomal abnormalities, mutations, and recombination - which is all very important for an understanding of human (and non-human) genetics. Chapter 10 is my favorite - it gives a very well written description of the Hardy-Weinberg theory of how genes propogate in a population. This is all tied in with the theory of evolution in chapter 11. Chapters 12 and 13 then go into newsworthy topics such as nature-vs-nurture and human cloning. All in all, it is a very well written book which everyone should read. My only criticism is that the figures are not as good as they could be. The authors need to hire a good artist to help them with the next edition! I think they're clear enough, but they could have been made a lot nicer. Still - I give the book a five star rating.Dave

Well-written and a great topic of discussion. Highly recommend!

Amazon.com Review

Art meets earth science in Earthsong, a gallery of spectacular aerial photographs by Bernhard Edmaier. Reproduced in full color on oversized pages, the patterns of deserts, glaciers, volcanoes, and grassland often resemble abstract paintings. But the wisdom of this book lies in its pairing of beautiful images with brief explanations by geologist Angelika Jung-Huettl of the forces that produced these startling effects. Divided into four parts--Agua (water), Barren (tundra), Desert, and Green--Earthsong is full of surprises. The action ranges from the brilliant, firecracker-like explosion of lava fields on Mt. Etna in Sicily to the sci-fi shapes of boiling mud pools in Waiotapu, New Zealand, powered by sulphur gas. On Disko Bay in western Greenland, a delicate embroidery of fine-grained ice has been shaped by wind, waves and frozen fog. The pristine clarity of early morning light reveals huge swaths of rolling and rippling orange-red sand in the Namib Desert of southwest Africa. Subtly meandering patterns worthy of a master etcher are carved into the icy wastes of Iceland by the action of volcanic dust, snow, sun and wind. While most of the book surveys sparsely inhabited regions, geologic action is also observed next door to major population centers. Cutting a dark ribbon through a lush meadow in eastern Germany, the Tollense River and its hungry algae will eventually erode and conquer the entire valley. Quietly acknowledging the effects of global warning, Earthsong literally hovers above the earth to reveal the effects of the interconnected forces that continue to shape our planet. --Cathy Curtis

Great coffee table book. I really enjoyed all the photos. Some space in the book could be better utilized. There are some pages almost completely blank except for a very small picture. Overall great book.

Gorgeous book!

The book has the most amazing photographs that truly celebrate the Earth. I would highly recommend this work of art. It's spectacular and I'm certainly glad I purchased it.

Edmaier takes us to a variety of isolated and relatively unpopulated areas for some terrific aerial photos of our planet. We see water, ice, tundra, glaciers, sandy deserts, volcanoes, coasts, grassland, and forests. And Jung-Huettl's descriptions of what we are seeing are nicely done. The overall effect is eerie, as if the Earth were uninhabited (by our species, at least) and we humans were looking the place over and trying to decide if we wanted to visit it, live there, or try someplace else.In any case, the photographs are marvellous and show plenty of detail. If I were writing a book on planetary science, I'd want to use a couple of these photos for the section on our little world.

The photographs are stunning but it's not worth buying the postcard version of these if your intent is to USE them as postcards. This is because these (as well as many other postcards from this publisher) are the non-standard size of 6" x 6". They cannot be handled as normal postcards by the USPS and cost more than a first-class envelope to send and will have to be sorted and processed by hand rather than by machine. If you're only looking for small cardstock version of the images this is a fine choice.

This is a book that one must see to truly appreciate. I came across it in a store and began to browse because it looked as though it was a collection of spectacular works of modern art. The realisation that it was an album of aerial photographs only made it more compelling. There are many images that are breathtaking in their own right but the effect of combining them into a planetary photo essay is nothing short of outstanding. It uniquely explores the great diversity of Mother Earth while highlighting the beauty that is always present in her many forms.Everyone I have showed this book to has had a similar reaction. If you are looking for a gift for that person who is difficult to buy for because they seem to have everything, look no further. They are sure to be delighted.

I was really looking forward to receiving and reading this book - I had looked at it in the stores but it was plastic wrapped and, therefore, I could not see what was inside. However, once I had received it from Amazon and opened it, my eager anticipation gave way to annoyance and disappointment. The photographs of the earth from above are, indeed, spectacular and of the highest quality, BUT Edmaier has used (or appears to have used) the same (or variations of the same) photographs over and over again - even though the book is supposed to have four distinct themes, Aqua, Barren, Desert and Green. I own several books published by Phaidon and have been impressed beyond expectation with every one of them - not this time. I considered the book price to be reasonable until I opened it - now I feel as if I have been ripped off! With over 220 pages, I expected in the region of 150-200 different photographs. Yes, the photographs are different but most of them are just different views of the same subject - not what I expected at all. Overall, a nice coffee table book, but far too expensive for what you actually get. Very disappointing!

This is a beautiful book--incredible photography, carefully printed. There is a printing flaw on page 26.
