About the Author

Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Larry Newman was the recipient of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' 62nd Annual Los Angeles area Emmy award for Children/Youth Programming. Mr Newman wrote, directed and produced the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra shows which have aired nationally and feature students from more than two dozen Children's Music Workshop school programs. This was Mr. Newman's third Emmy win. He also received Emmys in 2009 and 2008 for those honor orchestra broadcasts and was most recently nominated in 2011 for a fourth Emmy for Orchestra Kids 2010. In 2009, Mr. Newman was honored by the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall for his contributions to music education in Los Angeles. He was also featured on CityView's Channel 35 series, "Faces of LA". Mr. Newman received the 2006 Lori Petrick Excellence in Education Award from the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation. The award is underwritten by the Boone Foundation - a philanthropic group whose mission is to support "passionate people who provide excellent programs to youth". Excellent beginner books for the violin or viola player in their first or second year. Larry Newman has an entire series of music books for violin, viola and cello that are all excellent for players in their first few years. I would not consider these lesson books, but books to supplement beginner players to learn more popular songs. For my young boys, I have the Don't Fret colored finger guide on their 1/4 and 1/2 violins. Then to help them find the correct notes, I will sometimes use a blue, yellow, pink and green or orange highlighter to color the notes on sheet music. I know it's a learning crutch, but it makes finding and playing the correct note faster and easier....the more positive feedback they get in playing a correct note, the longer they stay with learning music and different musical instruments (I hope). I also like the books because the songs are also easy enough for the beginner player to start memorizing songs too. Between the cello, violin and viola, I think we own all of them.

My students really enjoy this book! The titles of each little song is funny and makes the learning so much nicer! In the notes are great big letters with the name of the note inside them. It makes learning Violin so much more friendly. Especially when they need something to make them comfortable right at the beginning !

Not really what I expected from the description. Yes it is a book for beginners however it is a book designed for beginners in a classroom setting with an actual violin teacher..... which she is not & I am not. A bit disappointed especially as this was a Christmas gift for my daughter.

I have a 7 year old student who has struggled with attention span during lessons. I started her out with the Essential Elements violin book, which was fine, but I saw that she was loosing interest and she said that the notes were too small. Essential Elements is a great book, but my student really needed something that was written especially with the young student in mind with pictures and big print, just as the beginner piano books are. After finding this on Amazon and getting it for her, I am pleased to say that this book made all the difference for her. She says it's a lot easier and more fun. If you have students 9 years old and under this might be the key to retaining their interest! :)

Got this for my 5yr old and he loves it!

Was hoping for a young beginner book that fills the gap between the first violin lesson and Suzuki Twinkle. This is more like "Essentials for Strings," which is a decent book the schools use, only for younger kids, with silly pictures and larger notes. Twinkle is actually used in this book as well, not the first piece, but very early on. Only a few preparatory exercises, not really performance pieces. No accompaniment that I can find? (Not as fun for the little ones!)

This looks great but hasn't been tried yet. It is part of a Christmas gift along with a violin.

Richard Saferstein, Ph.D., retired after serving 21 years as the chief forensic scientist of the New Jersey State Police Laboratory, one of the largest crime laboratories in the United States. He currently acts as a consultant for attorneys and the media in the area of forensic science. During the O. J. Simpson criminal trial, Dr. Saferstein provided extensive commentary on forensic aspects of the case for the Rivera Live show, the E! television network, ABC radio, and various radio talk shows. From 1972 to 1991, he taught an introductory forensic science course in the criminal justice programs at the College of New Jersey and Ocean County College. These teaching experiences played an influential role in Dr. Saferstein’s authorship in 1977 of the widely used introductory textbook Criminalistics: An Introduction to Forensic Science, currently in this twelfth edition. Saferstein’s basic philosophy in writing Criminalistics is to make forensic science understandable and meaningful to the nonscience reader, while giving the reader an appreciation for the scientific principles that underlie the subject. Dr. Saferstein has authored or co-authored more than 45 technical papers and chapters covering a variety of forensic topics. The book itself is awesome. But do not buy this version that comes with the MyCJLab. The publisher (Pearson) only grants access for customers who have purchased from Pearson directly. I just spent 2 hours of dealing with customer service to find this out. Ugh!

Criminalistics is obviously for a student or professor interested in forensics. This is a standard text, maybe written a little better than some. The problem with all of these kinds of textbooks is that it is out of date a few days after you receive it...the book is already in it's next edition! What I don't understand is, does the field of criminalistics change all that much so quickly? I understand that improvements and innovations in technology happen rapidly, but in looking at this text you wonder what it is that changed. While it is a good text, covering all the essentials of criminalistics, I'm not sure it's worth the price. It would be better to rent this text from some source if you really like it rather than purchase it outright.

Some of it was hard to understand. It was just bland. I've seen so many other better text books about this subject. Some of the chapters just dragged on as well.

Bought this book for a biology class I was taking. It is very interesting with lots of cases to review and make you think. Only con is that I didn't get the "mycrimekit" registration number that should have come with the book. If you are buying this book, you want to make sure you get that number as well so you can go online and access more information.

The next version is so much better....$100 more is so worth it because the next version is so much different. Much more organized and the information in the next book is much better.

Interesting book, although it was a little different from the book I actually needed and couldn't find at the moment, but this book was as good as the newer edition. Great book it helped a lot with my Forensic Science class.

Okay book. Leaves a lot unanswered and is a bit outdated on information about collection techniques. Also includes information about hair analysis which has been discredited so be cautious!

I really wanted to love this book. I've listened to the author, and he's so easy to understand. He frames his arguments rationally and covers a lot in a little time. The concept is elegant, but the execution was hard for me to follow. The book has some excellent 5-star points, especially at the beginning. Then I began to feel bogged down by all the pictures (often hard to interpret) and "too much" info. Hard to describe, but almost gave up reading it. While I had a big picture takeaway -- look for a 'causer' outside the room -- I wish I had gotten more out of it.

I enjoyed reading God's Crime Scene. Enjoyed the crime stories which helped present the tools of investigation. More and more I am impressed by the piles of evidence that point towards a reasonable believe in God as the creator of the Universe. I had mainly accepted it on faith, but having the case laid out like this was terrifically helpful. I love science and I love Jesus and I love that both of these are so closely intertwined. I highly recommend this book.

This book is one of the freshest perspectives I've seen for evaluating eight main lines of evidence (cosmological, life from non-living things/biological structures/reproduction, the mind proceeding from the brain, free will/morality/presence of evil) to present not only an argument for the existence of God, but also a snapshot of what these things reveal about His character. Wallace looks at both sides of the arguments and provides tools for evaluating these and other arguments. I definitely recommend reading this book.

I used materials from Cold-Case Christianity and Forensic Faith for a "personal enrichment" class at Maranatha Bible College. The student's loved Jim Wallace's no-nonsense crisp evidentiary approach to evangelism and apologetics. The students wanted more. In God's Crime Scene (GCS), Jim marshals evidence from an impressive range of writers and thinkers from the fields of physics, biology, psychology, philosophy, theology and more to show the scientific case for God is compelling yet accessible for "jurors" without specialized academic training. The 40 pages of "Case Files" at the end of the book listing both pro and con expert witnesses together with sources for further investigation are an excellent start for the lay-person wanting to delve deeper. I am using GCS to prepare an introduction to science-based apologetics and evangelism course. Jim Wallace has done the heavy-lifting providing a persuasive structure and many useful analogies to make concepts easier to grasp. I recommend GCS to instructors and small group leaders seeking to foster science-based evangelism.

Great book! J. Warner Wallace's method is perfect for communicating arguments for God existence (and other arguments in his other books) to people today because most people have grown up watching so many crime/legal tv shows and movies. I would personally read his books if they were just about investigating crimes because there is so much to learn in that area through his books. However, he is investigating something much more important and interesting than crimes, he is using cold case methods to investigate the existence of God. These methods carry over very well because they are both investigations of events that happened in the past, i.e., evaluating evidence from cold cases which are from the past and evaluating evidence from our universe which came into existence in the past. J. Warner Wallace is able to communicate these ideas with intellectual rigor while still being able to communicate it in a way that is interesting and accessible to modern people. Thanks for the great work!

Get this book. If you are a Christian, and agnostic, or an atheist, or a member of another faith, get this book. This is one of the clearest descriptions of the creation of the universe I have ever read, and I have read most of them. This is written by an author who is one of the very best, most organized, and clearest thinkers and writers I have read anywhere. This is a part of a trilogy, and I strongly recommend all of them. This is written for the layman level, and even older children can benefit from this series of books. I can not recommend it more.

Is there a God?Wallace's primary contribution to this discussion is a fresh perspective. The arguments he uses are tried and true, but his exemplars are new and fresh. As a cold-case detective he looks at the evidence through a new, distinctive lens. For those looking for a new take on the arguments, this might be your answer.His secondary contribution, one that is not often accomplished, is the accessibility he brings to the arguments. He makes these arguments easy to understand through usually deft handling, reiteration, and that new perspective mentioned earlier. This results in a somewhat surface treatment, which works perfectly for this book and should open minds to seek more answers.My only disappointment? Chapter 1 (I think) he gets into a completely appropriate use of Aquinas' argument from motion. Right place, right time, but the example he uses muddies the waters a bit. Not a fatal flaw, but a bit of a bummer. Almost as if the argument itself, though used correctly, wasn't fully understood.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am intending to teach it at church for both adults and youth. I think it's a valuable resource that may be a catalyst to open eyes to truth. However, study up elsewhere on the arguments he presents. Kids especially will want to go deeper than this book may have gone, though now they may know better what to ask.Well worth the read. . . and probably well worth teaching and discussing.

Saw this at my local bookstore and checked with Amazon.com and was happy to purchase it online for a substantial discount here. This book is great for anyone beginning to setup their own home theater and for those that really like to get into the meat of this hobby. The pages are easy to read with good, clear black and white photos spread throughout.What this book offers are those uncommon tips and tricks that big name electronics stores don't want you to know about. This book alone will save me hundreds of dollars from all the information provided inside. It's doesn't have too much techno-babble but it won't feel like a crash course booklet leaving you wanting more. Intelligently laid out and highly recommended.

I purchased this book to gain more knowledge of home theater and audio equipment. My expectation was that the book will cover those topics in great depth. However I found that this book covers a lot of basic stuffs ( a little too much for me). I would recommend this book if you have no clue about TV, audio or home theater. That's the reason I gave only three stars. It is sole based on my expectation.The book is greatly written and easy to understand.

This book really covers everything that has to do with a home theater: from selecting the right components, to component configuration, to cabling, to making your theater look awesome. This book is a must read before you start your home theater.The book begins with a very thorough and impressive discussion of how and where to buy home theater components. The author discusses receivers (both audio and video), DVD players, TVs (both HD and standard), as well as the ins and outs of buying online versus at a local store. This discussion naturally leads to a very large section on "configuration", which includes such things as how to install and configure a terrestrial television antenna, how to match your subwoofer to your room, and everything you ever wanted to know about cables. I particularly enjoyed the author's discussion of the modern myth of expensive cabling. He provides a very good explanation of what "good enough" means (you wouldn't put gold water pipes in your home, why spend $100 on a gold cable?).As mentioned, this is a very interesting and useful book for anyone planning or currently working on a home theater. It dispelled a lot of myths I had heard in the past, and provides clear explanations as to why many of these myths are false. Additionally, I found that the book provided sound advice in the purchase and configuration of home theater components.

Sometimes the Hacks books go a little too far. The iPod book for example spent eighteen pages on how to mold a new iPod console for your car. It would have been very easy for this book to go over that edge but it keeps it's focus and stays well within the realm of practical advice to enhance your home theater.The sections on how to enhance your projection TV is excellent and very practical. There is good coverage of speaker calibration, system maintenance, and TiVo. There is also good material on acoustic tremblers which will bring the experience really close to home.A must buy book for home theater enthusiasts. There is lots of material here that you can find on the web, but it's better organized, illustrated and explained here.

I have been a fan of the scholarship of Donald S. Lopez Jr. for a long time: His "Prisoner's of Shangri-la" and "Tibetan Religion in Context" shattered a lot of myths I had held on the topic and that permeated popular culture both within and outside convert Buddhist circles. Although he has two books on myths about Buddhism and the Buddha that go into little known elements of Theravada history, Lopez tends to focus on myths of Mahayana buddhism and the critical studies around it, and particularly on Vajrayana variants. This was different in that he was dealing with a text, although he did a treatment on the "Tibetan Book of the Dead," and a text, while important to Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism, is foundational for Tendei, Shin, Shingon, and most dramatically Nichiren Buddhism.Lopez starts with the texts seem origins in the Sanskrit literature of the Indo-Greek world of Bactria. There is some speculations on the exact nature of the shift here. The secret doctrine elements of the text set it apart from the other two famous Mahayana sutras readily found in English, the Heart Sutra (which isn't really even a Sutra) and the Diamond Sutra (foundational for Chan/Seon/Zen). Lopez then talks us through the reception in China, the development of Chinese esoteric Buddhism, the shift to Japan, Japanese devotional and esoteric Buddhism(s), the develop of Nichiren Buddhism in particular, the reception of the Lotus Sutra in French and American scholarship, the Development of the modern Nichiren sects, their consolidation in the Meiji restoration at the same time as French-English scholarship on the Lotus sutra begins, and then the post-war development of Nichiren outside of Japan.Fascinating and brings up many of the problems of the history of Buddhism and the Mahayana developments outside of India and outside of their original Sanskrit context. Easily readable despite the obscurity of a lot of the topic, and offers a good history of Mahayana developments in both Japan and America in particular through the lens of the Lotus Sutra's reception.

Before I start to study the Lotus Sutra, I wanted a background, a primer, so to speak, before I began. Very easy reading and now, am even more excited to jump into the actual Sutra. Highly recommend!

Half of a book...where is the rest? A good read...I liked it...but I felt that the book missed so much. How bout a chapter concerning metaphysical aspects? The notion that we can attain Buddhahood in our present form, just as we are, is at the heart of contemporary Buddhism. Only the Lotus Sutra...and only the Lotus Sutra taught this idea. The 16th Chapter teaches the eternity of life...the idea of rebirth is implicit. Two huge concepts that were not even mentioned. Buddhism evolves and adapts to suit the environment in which if flourishes...and that my friend, is why we practice Buddhism and not Shakyamunism.

This was a gift for my son, and he tells me he's enjoying it.

When it comes to Christian beliefs about Satan and demons, there are typically two basic approaches. So-called "conservative" Christians tend to view the issue solely as a spiritual matter. Satan and demons are spiritual beings, and they affect the spiritual well-being of people. On the other hand, so-called "progressive" Christians, if they even have a belief in such things, reduce demons to matters of injustice, often systemic or political in nature.Richard Beck challenges both approaches, which is perhaps the greatest strength of this book. Those looking for stories resembling scenes from "The Exorcist" will be sorely disappointed, for Beck is convinced that the effects of Satan and his minions are much worse than simply inducing vomiting in those who have fallen prey to their onslaught. Likewise, those who equate spiritual warfare with political activism will be pressed to acknowledge that perhaps there really is a "spirit" within the structures that needs to be exorcised or fought in order for real transformation to take place.This book is written for Christians, and it will be helpful for those from a wide range of backgrounds. Those who've become embarrassed by Christian claims about the Devil as a pitch-fork carrying, red creature with pointy ears, might come to see the reality of Satan after reading this book. Likewise, those obsessed with exorcisms and demonic possession, as understood in some (charismatic) circles emphasizing spiritual warfare, might find that Satan's power is much greater than even they had imagined.Beck is a gifted communicator who draws from a range of source material to illustrate his points, including such diverse things as Scooby-Doo, Pat Benatar, and Twitter. Most relevant are the stories that he shares from his time leading a weekly Bible study at a maximum-security prison. I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in this topic.*Main (and only) Criticism - The editing work is quite poor. Typos are so numerous in places that I wondered if I had received an advance copy that hadn't been proofread by an editor.

tl;dr: I would recommend buying this book, as long as you understand that Dr. Beck is beginning the conversation, not ending it. I doubt that, for anyone, this book will resolve any tension they feel or offer closure/certainty of any sort. However, it may provide for you a framing that helps you dive deeper.--In Reviving Old Scratch, Dr. Beck argues that-- regardless of whether Satan is a sentient being with a personal will and physical/spiritual presence-- there is a certain understanding of evil and of the Devil that is both robust and thoroughly Christian. Per my understanding of the text, he argues that the pathway to understanding the Devil lies through re-enchanting our worldview, regardless of whether we are theologically conservative or liberal. Both sides of the theological fence have become disenchanted with the world, and both need to re-engage with what it means for the immanent God to be incarnate through acts of love.The content of book hearkens back to C.S. Lewis' "That Hideous Strength". If you enjoyed this book and are looking to see its themes fleshed out in a work of fiction, I would highly recommend Lewis' Space Trilogy. The final book in the series addresses many of these themes, and I would wonder if the author was similarly affected in some capacity.This book very effectively outlines the fundamentals of his position, and of why we should care about it. I'm not sure that a hostile reader would be persuaded, but a reader open to the ideas it presents would likely them engaging.Unfortunately, the limitations of the book are in its simplicity. I struggled with whether to rate this "3" or "4" stars, but ultimately, I feel that it was too shallow to accomplish what it set out to do. If the book was able to engage in a mental conversation with me by answering the questions I had, I would have bumped it up to "4" stars. If it was able to do so in a way that I found profound masterful, I would have bumped it up to "5" stars.Below are some specific points where I felt the book, had it been written differently, could have been elevated from "3" to "4" stars:- Dr. Beck pulls out some tensions we have with scripture, but fails to resolve (or even address) the tensions in ways that leave the reader satisfied. For example, in the "Jesus the Exorcist" chapter, he addresses the Jeffersonian approach to "cutting up your Bible" and removing the passages we find troubling. He claims that this is problematic. However, elsewhere (such as in the chapter, "Angels & Demons"), he notes discrepancies in how modern people understand scripture and the world versus how ancient people do. This is disconcerting and, even if the author does not wish to sidetrack the reader, the tension-- which is quite central to the book-- should at least be addressed, so as not to leave a reader in a more confused state than when they began.-While I'm sympathetic to Dr. Beck's arguments in the chapter, "The White Witch", for rejecting penal substitutionary atonement theories-- in fact, I am inclined to agree with him-- he has stirred up an anthill without being able to deal with the resulting bug bites. In most of today's theological institutions, including churches and seminaries, rejecting penal substitution is akin to rejecting a fundamental of Christianity. For Dr. Beck to throw that out as a fragment of a chapter without addressing or dealing with the profound implications is like putting a hungry person in the middle of the Pacific without a boat and expecting them to fish. You just completely upended someone's world in order to get them access to what they need, but didn't give them any of the tools or resources they need to deal with the complete change of circumstances.-I found myself unsure of how to apply much of what he advocated for. In the "Holy Ghost Congo Lines" chapter, he argues for rejecting a disenchanted worldview and embracing enchantment, but he doesn't tell us how to get there. At the end of the chapter, he spends maybe two paragraphs trying to elucidate how we can do this. Those two (or so) paragraphs should have and could have, frankly, merited several chapters on their own. In "Angels & Demons", he argues that Christians should reject the Zeitgeist of the world and embrace Christ's vision of love, but I don't understand how we're supposed to apply that or what that looks like. He rejects the actions of those such as Westboro Baptist, but fails to explain how our application must lead in a different direction.In conclusion, my core problem with the book is an inconsistency between its content and its method. The book argues that we should reject disenchantment, find depth and meaning in the world, and really live out a bold and revolutionary love. Unfortunately, the book is very shallow-- this is a very short book and is not, itself, enchanting. It fails to carry out the bold and revolutionary work that it tasked itself with. Its content is great, but it's coffee-table level.Would I buy it again? Yes, but knowing that I would be dissatisfied at the end. If Dr. Beck were to put out a follow-up, in which he dove into the issues he raises in-depth and brings the reader to enchanted, strange new places in bold and revolutionary ways, I would be thrilled to join him. As it is, unfortunately, this book isn't sufficient to complete the work it sets out for itself.This book was paid for by me. I did not receive any compensation or free copies.
