Highly recommend this cookbook for anyone that is interested in making their own Indian food. Very easy to understand, written very well. Lots more than just a cookbook. I encourage everyone to start at the beginning and read it like you would any book... then try the recipes. Fully describes why certain methods are used and you get a real history of how the dishes came about. Lots of terrific recipes with recommendations for pairing of dishes plus examples of what to eat with rice or just naan. First time try exactly as written to get the full experience! Very easy to follow recipes but some can be time consuming. Very well written recipes but I recommend to read the whole recipe before starting it.The book recommends to roast your own spices. DO IT!!! You will not regret the extra few minutes it takes. Quick flash in a dry skillet and grind. I purchased a cheap coffee grinder just for the spices. I have been roasting my own spices for years now and will NEVER buy the spices in the jar again. It's that much of a difference in flavor. No matter what food I'm making, (Indian, Mexican, American, Italian etc,) I roast my own spices prior to using. Even cinnamon. I buy the cinnamon sticks in bulk and do a quick roast (sometimes just pop in microwave for a few seconds until it starts to uncurl) and then grind and sift. So much fresher than the jars. Incredible information in this book. You don't have to be a gourmet cook to follow it. Even a beginner cook can follow these recipes.I cannot recommend this book enough! I have bought 2 for friends because I didn't want to loan mine out even though I may not be using it at the time they asked to borrow.

This is still the best Indian cookbook if you can only have one. More, detailed, authentic and wider in scope than even Madhur Jaffery's classic India cuisine works for English speaking cooks. Massive and massively important book.

I love Indian food and have a bunch of different Indian cookbooks, but this is my long-term favorite. I've been using it for at least four years and have had (almost) nothing but compliments on it.The writing is simple and straightforward, the recipe quantities and timing are accurate and the results are dependably excellent. The descriptions of how to prepare and roast the spices are extremely helpful -- and when I described this to one of my Indian friends, her comment was "but of course, roasting the spices well is essential!" Yet, mysteriously, this process was described in none of my other cookbooks!The description of ingredients is extremely helpful when shopping at the local Indian grocery where they may know the same ingredient under a different term. And, conversely, if you buy something at the grocery and want to know what it is, the cookbook is very likely to tell you.The recipes hav been adjusted for American tastes so they are spicy and flavorful but not full-bore-on-hot, so if you like a really REALLY spicy vindaloo, you'll need to adjust the seasonings substantially.The "go with" menu suggestions are very helpful and the line drawings (at least for me) work better than photographs to illustrate the author's points.Highly recommend: pilaf benares style (makes bismati rice that tastes just the way it smells before cooking); the banana and yoghurt salad seasoned with cardomom, the bhaghan bartha (smoked eggplant with herbs) and the truly amazing murgh masala (chicken with tomato and brown onion gravy).

This is now my bible at the restaurant I own. It thourougly goes through all elements of Indian cooking from spice discreptions and preparations to preparing every dish in a way that is easy in an American kitchen. I like that it even has recipes for creating ingredients like paneer cheese and has historical information about the variations on recipes. If I had to have one Indian cook book this one would be it!

I bought this as a gift for my husband, since he loves to cook. We tried checking it out at the library first, just to see what the recipes were like, but, alas, our small library did not have it. So I purchased it for him anyway as a surprise, based on the outstanding reviews.Wow. Delicious stuff in here! My husband has been impressed with the format and comprehensiveness of the recipes; he loves how there are sides listed after each main course. And, so far, we have been really impressed with the taste of every meal that has come from this book. Like other reviewers have said, the recipes are not simple or for beginners, necessarily, but, overall, this is a great cookbook if you want to make authentic and delicious Indian food!

Love this book so much. I read it like a novel at bedtime. Sahni's recipes may seem daunting to one initiated in Indian cuisine, but they are so thorough and so clear that after a few recipes, one feels very confident and immersed in the aromas, techniques, and histories of each dish.

I already have this book but ordered it again for a family member. It is one of my favorites. Julie shares so much about her culture while cooking. Fro m proper tools, pans, ingredients and easy to follow methods for preparation along with stories. Iit is an educational and enjoyable book tto use..

I have cooked many recipes often and every time am fascinated by the results. The flavors and aromas are amazing and inviting, my guests always ask for seconds, I find the secret is, of course if one is to cook Indian, spices are the key, patience is good and a palate that will accept different flavors all at the same time. This book is the best I have in my collection, and if someone feels intimidated by all the spices that every recipe requires, don't be, you can find all the spices online this days, if no Indian store is available close to you. The auhor wonderfully guides the reader step by step. If you are looking for real Indian food where you can really taste the different flavors this book is for you. Other books on Indian food, tend to reduce the flavor and adjust it to the western palate, this book doesn't. I absolutely recommend it!!! My favorite is Chicken Kabuli!!! The best!!!

I have to begin this review with an admission that I messed up. I forgot to read this book before I read #16, which I finished last week.Just a recap, the Great Revolt (the topic of book #16) occurs in 1381, London England. A bloody, irrational affair led by the Upright Men, where some foreigners, prostitutes, and government leaders are caught and murdered.Anyway, in this book, it is May 1381 and the Great Revolt is about to explode into reality. A man, the "Herald from Hell", comes in the night blowing his horn and calling a terrifying message, in rhyme, to the people the Upright Men have condemned for their crimes against the people.People are frightened and many make plans to leave London until everything calms down. This includes a chancery clerk by the name of Whitfield, who had pawned all of his possessions so he could steal away to safety with his money. But, the night before he leaves, he is found hanging, fully dressed, in a brothel.Brother Athelstan is convinced that Whitfield did not commit suicide but was murdered. How could it happen? The room in which he was found was securely closed. The door bolted and locked, the window shutters firmly closed and locked as well. A battering ram is needed to break the door down but yet, the clerk was murdered. How did the killer escape?As Brother Athelstan searches for the killer, more deaths occur and at the same time, the leaders of the coming revolt continue their plans.Add to this mystery is another of more spiritual matters. A treasured relic is stolen from a monastery in mainland Europe. The knight who stole it brings it to England and, before he dies, he hides it--in the very brothel where Whitfield is later murdered. The wastrel nephew of the knight, in one of his many searches for the relic, is present when the clerk is murdered and so is caught up in the search for the killer.Who is the Herald from Hell? Who murdered the clerk and others? Where is the relic that is supposedly hidden in the brothel?Brother Athelstan, a brilliant young Dominican priest, former soldier, and shepherd of his small flock at St. Erconwald's has his work cut out for him this time

I love this series but this particular one was incredibly repetitive internally. How many times do the witnesses have to repeat the same testimony or Brother Athelstan recount it ? Couldn't Doherty state the first in detail and then just say the other's concurred? How many times do we need to hear about the beaker of blood with small onions, spiked like traitors heads? Cranston's ever present, and frequently referenced, miraculous wineskin is one thing but this is another. Rather than enriching our understanding it seems to insult our powers of retention. Did you think we would forget from one page to the other that the door was locked and bolted. Was there a word or page minimum Doherty struggled to meet?

This book regains the groove that was somewhat lost in the previous book.While the mystery itself is relatively easy to figure out. It's the back story of the unrest that grabs and holds the readers interest.Once again, we are introduced to characters inhabiting the underbelly of the city, and it's environs who are far more interesting to meet than the killer, whose story seems almost peripheral, as the Upright Men (and women) move inexorably toward a confrontation with the Crown .Then, there's the grand old lady herself, London, with all hermany, disreputable charms so graphically described that the reader can hear her strident voice, and smell noiseome perfume.I can't wait to visit again.

Like all of Doherty's Brother Athelstan novels, this one is filled with historical facts, marvelous character studies and the continuing relationship between Athelstan and Lord Cranston. The historical time period is fascinating for those who like English history and the "whodunit" is always entertaining with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing.

PAUL DOHERTY ALWAYS WRITES A VERY GOOD STORY AND ALTHOUGH YOU THINK YOU HAVE WORKED IT OUT THERE IS ALWAYS A SURPRISE AT THE END.EXTREMELY GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE MEDIEVAL TIMES AND YOU FEEL AS IF YOU WERE THERE.I HAVE LIVED IN AND KNOW A LOT OF THE PLACES HE TALKS ABOUT AND I CAN VISUALISE MYSELF THERE.HISTORICALLY ACCURATE AND AS A HISTORIAN MYSELF I COMMEND HIM AND RECOMMEND HIM AS A VERY GOOD WRITER.

So twisty! Already have the next book. I have to make time to do other stuff, Yikes! The plot so unexpectedly turns...

Yet another Great book by one of the Best English Historical Mystery author's. Highly recommend the entire series.

This story -- no, this AUTHOR -- man. I read a LOT, and I have to say, Gregg Hurwitz is one of the best I've ever come across. Character development, plot twists, action sequences: yes, he has all of that. But what really impresses me is the descriptors he uses. Like I said, I've read a lot, particularly in the action genre, and certain things quickly become cliched. Hurwitz applies his own unique phrasing with an impact that is visceral. "The Survivor" is no exception. Pick it up when you have the time to read it all the way through, and be prepared to feel EVERYTHING.Enjoy.

This is a terrific novel, on two levels. The first level is that it stands out in the suspense genre. Every time you think the situation can't get worse, it does. Nate Overbay is a man who seems to have hit bottom. He has nothing left to live for in the present, he is haunted by the past (literally - he has a ghost as an unwanted companion), and his future is soon to end. The second level is literary. The author takes pains to use writing techniques that are often omitted, and his hard work pays off for the reader. The beginning foreshadows the end, there are parallels in situations all through the book, and - I was really pleased with this - the behavior of one daughter reflects the behavior of one father. There is a Ukrainian master criminal who adores his daughter, a teenage brat who drinks, uses drugs, is promiscuous, and doesn't care about school. There is Nate, who adores his daughter, a teenage Goth who is in love with one guy (apparently unsuitable, but wait) and does her best in school. Nate encounters Pavlo, the criminal, and once their paths cross, a wild ride begins. One father will gain his family, one father will lose his; one man will redeem himself and one man will not. This is a great read!

Nate Overbay performs a heroic deed, gets married, has a daughter, has a good job, and has his own house. Headed towards the American dream. Then everything turns to ashes. His National Guard unit is called up for service in Iraq. He loses friends, returns home with PTSD and nightmares, haunted by visitations of the ghost of a dead friend. All that is compounded when he is diagnosed with ALS, a degenerative disease. His life is falling apart and he is out on a top floor window ledge ready to end it all. But shots are fired inside and people are being killed. He looks in through the window, intervenes and becomes a hero, saving the day.The only problem is that he has disrupted the plans of a psychotic Ukrainian gangster who has a spiderweb reaching into the social structure. He wants Nate to bring him what he was trying to steal. Otherwise he will torture and kill Nate's family. Nate himself has nothing to lose - after all, he intended to kill himself at the outset. But he is protective of his family. This becomes a deadly game between Nate and the gangster, and bodies pile up as people are killed. To quote an expression from another novel Catch Me: A Detective D.D. Warren Novel, "Everyone has to die sometime. Be Brave."The novel is not a mystery as you know the bad guys from the start, but it is nonstop action as Nate contends with the threat. Everyone is not going to survive.The author's other novels includeYou're Next, the just being released Tell No Lies, and others. He has also written short stories including, "The Thief" which appears in First Thrills: High-Octane Stories from the Hottest Thriller Authors

This is another wonderful book by Gregg Hurwitz. In this one, he takes a damaged and sick hero who has lost his family because he can't get beyond the horrors of the war he experienced or his PTSD. And now he is facing a horrible health issue that leaves him ready to take his own life. But just at that moment, he ends up being the hero in a bank robbery. Unfortunately, a really, really bad guy is willing to kill the hero's daughter if he doesn't get the item he needs from the bank. This leads to a series of challenges the hero and his family must surpass and a mystery to solve quickly or lose his daughter. Through the process he manages to reconnect with his wife and daughter. However, to stop the bad guy, he must make the ultimate sacrifice. Hurwitz is a master at fleshing out all of these characters, making the reader care about them, root for the hero and his family, even knowing the hero cannot have a true happy ending because of his devastating illness. Hurwitz resolves this situation the only way it can be, leaving the reader deeply saddened and yet resolved to its inevitability. I HIGHLY recommend this and all Hurwitz books! Anyone should enjoy them all.

Gregg Hurwitz's THE SURVIVOR sends me into manic-depressive swings, the turbo-charged plot producing a high so exhilarating from the very first page that meth might as well be Valium, and writing--oh, that kid's prose--that makes me weep with the knowledge that I couldn't never be that good, that lyrical, in my dreams.Once again, Hurwitz takes a sympathetic, ordinary guy, gives him some inner angst and throws him into an impossible, life-threatening, morality-questioning situation and lets the guy's adrenaline and inner hero take over. After that, all you can do is fasten your seat belt, hang on tight, let the G-force slam you back in your reading chair and let the music of Hurwitz's words carry you on one hell of a ride.Absolutely the best thriller I've read this year (despite Gillian Flynn's brilliance, JT Ellison's heart, Allison Brennan's gumption, Bill Cameron's quirkiness--I could go on with the number of really good books I've read). Hurwitz is among a very small cadre of authors at the top of their game--amazing storytellers with an incredible ear for language and facility with words. Six out of five stars, and I'm only a quarter of the way through.

This is a great book!

I have been a search and rescue dog handler for ten years. I wish I had gotten this book eleven years ago; it would have saved me, and my dog, a lot of wasted time and effort learning how to do things by trial and error. As I was reading I constantly found myself saying, "Yep," "Uh-huh," "Been there, done that," etc. Sue has a wealth of knowledge and she expresses her thoughts in clear, simple language. This book is a valuable addition to any SAR K9 handler's library.

I did a quick scan looking for some issues suffered by newer handlers on our team. I was able to find the issues quickly, and get Sue's ideas for resolving. As a troubleshooting guide the book is a well-organized reference that trainers and team mentors should have and carry. Keep it in the truck!

Great book, very helpful, especially for the beginner handler. Also helpful reminders for the experienced. I highly recommend this book!

I believe it's best to state if there is any bias a reviewer might have up front so let me tell you that yes, I do have a bias. I have communicated with Dr. Habermas and he is an excellent friend and help through struggles of doubt. Dr. Habermas does not just write this out abstractly. He really lives it. Every reply I've got from him has led me to the belief that he truly does care about me and connect with me. When I meet Christians who are doubting, I'm always eager to point out Dr. Habermas's materials.This one will not disappoint. What I like about Habermas's style is that he doesn't speak in the heavy philosophical or apologetic language. Now I love both of those fields deeply, but I wonder about people who seem to speak exclusively in those fields. I wonder if a lot of people just try to use fancy terminology to make themselves look better. Dr. Habermas does not make me wonder about that. This is the kind of advice he'd give if he sat down to talk with you at Starbucks. I've heard Dr. Habermas speak a number of times on this topic before and I could practically hear his voice reading the passages.Also, it works. That's what's really important. Dr. Habermas has helped me immensely with self-doubt mainly and he has used the principles taught in this book. I also liked how he had in this one a chapter on differences amongst Christians. I have frequently been in Christian circles where I am the lone outsider with a different view, always within the pale of orthodoxy of course. This can be a hard one, but Dr. Habermas explains it well.Dr. Habermas also distinguishes between the kinds of doubts and how to deal with each of them. He shows how the most common kind he deals with when people come to him is emotional doubt. That has been my case as well when I'm dealing with some sort of doubt. There can be a factual kernel somewhere, but the flower that has come up is essentially emotional. Dr. Habermas would tell you that you need to know where your emotions get off. They're not bad things, but they're not meant to control you.Dr. Habermas is realistic about apologetics also. When I started the field, I had this delusion that if you just went out there and gave the answers, people would convert. That delusion doesn't last long. It also doesn't work when we argue with ourselves and have the "What if?" questions. Habermas's approach is that the "What if" questions are the problems. They can be anything and they don't usually have a factual basis and could be used to explain away anything or to refuse believing anything.I think all Christians should learn the lessons that Habermas speaks of in this book. Not only would we be helping ourselves, but maybe if we opened the doors of fellowship in our churches and were able to show the dark sides we're experiencing as well as the light, maybe we'd grow stronger together in Christ and be able to do more for him.

The book explains it is OK to doubt as doubt is part and parcel of our sin nature. My life quote is Mark 9:24 "I believe, help my unbelief" which makes books such as this important to me. We are reminded that younger believers are less settled in their beliefs and struggle with doubt more.Habermas also spends considerable time on the bickering between the various traditions. His work on this issues is worth the price of the book alone. This is one of those books that will reinforce what you do know and assist your struggle with what you don't. You will not be disappointed.

I ordered this book while going through a bout of doubt both about my current girlfriend and my faith (strange how some things are linked at times). Of course, since I live in Switzerland, the book took its time to arrive, and by the time I read it, my doubts had been blown away like the clouds on a windy day - by a four-hour phone call with my girlfriend. Previously, they had been exacerbated by reading the book "What is Atheism" by Douglas Krueger, to the point where I was wondering what would happen if I renounced my faith.When the sharpest doubt subsided (the "O boy, he is intelligent and logical and convincing and here I thought it was all true, what do I do now) I realized that while I still wanted to reread Krueger's book and check his arguments against those of apologists (dealing with factual doubt), any decision as to my beliefs should be made with a level head and not while in a panicked frenzy (i.e. while suffering from emotional doubt).The mere fact of doubting something does not mean it's necessarily wrong, and it would be foolish to change convictions every time someone rattles you with his or her arguments. (As reviews demonstrate, neither Atheists nor Christians seem to do that.) This is the main point Dr. Habermas is making, and his goal is clearly to lead any doubting Christian to the point where he or she can take a step back, take a look at the whole picture, and decide rationally and calmly on the course to be taken. It therefore seems to me that Bill Hays mistook Dr. Habermas' main thrust for a recommendation to exercise blind faith. Not so! Dr. Habermas encourages Christians to read apologetic books to counter factual doubts instead of simply using psychological tricks to push them aside; where he urges Christians not to question is in the area of emotional doubt, where questions frequently are "what ifs" of the destructive kind. To give an example: the question "What if I had married a more beautiful woman?" is not only destructive to your marriage, it tends to preoccupy your mind and preclude a levelheaded assessment of your wife's true qualities. The same is true for questions of the type "What if God does not exist despite what I factually know?" Rarely does anything positive come of them. (If the question is reduced to "What if God does not exist?" or "What facts are there about God's existence?", I believe it can lead to a very positive outcome.)In fine, Dr. Habermas has written a clear, logical assessment of doubt (it clicks very nicely with what I've experienced), throwing aside many popular misconceptions in the process. The reason I do not give it five stars is that I have not yet been in the position to apply his principles (I'm on a surprisingly long doubt-free period) and therefore cannot evaluate them. (Another reason is that I dislike the free-flowing margin - looks sloppy - but that's not his fault.) All in all I'd recommend this book to people who are worrying about their faith; to others who have factual questions, it will be of little help (one short chapter and a reference section).

Lake George deep, cold and beautiful, understandably attracts tourists; but the lake also has a rich and vibrant history. It was most important as a corridor between combatants during the French and Indian War. Glimpses of the lake's history can be seen through the study of the numerous sunken ships in the lake. Almost as interesting as the history of the wrecks, is the recounting of the efforts of a dedicated band of volunteers to locate, preserve and provide historical context for the wrecks. One unfortunate problem is that the book consists of a collection of newspaper articles which results in tedious repetition of basic facts; but do not let this blemish discourage you from reading this informative book

I love going to lake George,, it's so beautiful and clean and clear, So I was very interested when I saw this book. I have since loaned it out to friends and family. They loved it as well. I would suggest buying this interesting book. I had no idea how many ship actually went down in that lake. It will be different when I visit next summer.

Anything you want to know about finding sunken Revolutionary boats, leisure boats, to how much garbage they have cleaned up off the bottom of the lake. Interesting reading about the Under water explorers group who has the job of checking out the entire floor of the lake...

Mr. Benway's underwater photography is exceptional! He is also known for his underwater videography of Lake George's underwater maritime discoveries in 2 outstanding DVD's by Pepe Productions. One is The Lost Radeau. The other DVD is Wooden Bones.

I grew up in the area (Bolton Landing) found this book interesting but the author repeats himself over and over. Being a history major any information is great.

Very interesting History read of Lake George!

My husband did not find this book very interesting.
