this is fine for the person who knows absolutely nothing about the process but to understand the actual requirements you need much more help.. or actually .. not much more.. just better help..The process of trusts and wills is not rocket surgery.. Most of this stuff is form related as the author says and that is how law works in general most things are performed with legal forms that are readly available.. However the direction of this book was more so a covering of the lawyers actual performance of a single customer's requirements .. rather than the actual education you need to understand what you personally need to do for your family in your state. In other words it seems like 50% general info and 50% notes he took from a single client .. bundled together to give you an outline..So take it as that.. take it as a very basic outline... learn a bit... then move on and learn more.

Well written, informative, easy to understand...a peek behind the curtain in some ways. The author provides anecdotal remarks and puts a "human face" on the subject matter which I feel is unusual and refreshing. I developed a greater insight into the overall regulation of inheritaces as well as estate planning and methodologies....time well spent!

good info and explains well the different processes

good to have

great basic information and reference to use in preparation to consult with your attorney.

Not all that much info in here....

It gave me a lot of insight as to what to dowhen I make my will

Overall this is an excellent resource for planning your estate documents including wills and trusts. By comparison to "Estate Planning for Dummies" this is a shorter and more "to the point" text. The author manages to get right to the point and why you might want to use a will or trust and how. For example, while many types of property could be transferred by a will or trust, the specific reasons to use a trust or will are summarized in an easy to read almost bullet style. One of the better aspects of the text is that it clearly calls out different types of trusts, requirements for signatures, etc. that vary by different states. This is often not found in texts that seek a wide audience, but is here.Whether or not you are planning on using an attorney, this is an excellent guide. If you do plan to work with an attorney, this is worth the brief read to familiarize yourself with the terms and options in order to save you time (and $), but more importantly to make the best decisions. The text includes some VERY practical advice about why, for example, not to have multiple originals of your will and trust documents. Even when you have photocopies (which are not legally binding) it is worth limiting those because you will eventually want to track down and get rid of those when you make changes. As someone who's had both a will and multiple trusts and had to change them more than once -- this is VERY GOOD advice. The book includes worksheets and sample will and trust forms. I think the samples are adequate for someone that might want to write their own will for which an attorney may not be necessary if the will is simple. Although it includes samples of trust documents, they are literally in the book and unfortunately not available online. Although PeerLess Legal (the publisher) does have some sample documents online and maintains a web site with state specific information on will and estate legal requirements (ages, # of signatures required, notary requirements, etc.), the sample forms are NOT available online -- which means that if you want to use these forms you will have to scan and OCR them or retype them. I think the forms should be online....My second criticism of the text is that the text does not mention online legal forms from the likes of LegalZoom and Rocketlawyer. I've personally used Rocketlawyer and I think it is an outstanding service. The book should have mentioned these or at least similar resources. The third criticism I have is that the book does not adequately discuss what are now commonly complex family situations. For example, if one parent is the natural parent and the other "parent" (spouse) is not the parent of the child, it is unlikely that the second parent is a legal guardian because most states do not allow children to be legally adopted in a blended family if both of their natural parents are still alive. This gives rise to complicated questions about both wills and trusts. While wills and trusts must typically mention all children or provide for an equal inheritance among children that are unborn, there is much to ask about what states require (if anything -- I think the answer is none) to children that are not your natural children. There are many other complex examples that arise from "blended" families which are no so common that I think these kids of text really must lay out more details.Although the text discusses pre-nuptial agreements, I don't believe what's there is sufficient. Given the high divorce rate and having been through it myself, there is much not said here that should be and could be. Although the text suggests that nuptials can also be done after marriage, it doesn't offer good advice on how to reasonably do so -- again an area that should be expanded on..What's here is excellent. What's missing are details on blended family estate planning, more details on pre-nuptial and nuptial agreements, and online access to forms. Keep in mind that the bulk of the text is worksheets and forms, so don't be intimated by the length.
