I first read this book to my 6th grade class in 1963. They loved it! I have recommended it to several reading groups. Jean Pierre Hallet made a life long impression on me with his autobiography.

Finishes out my collection of his books.

I truly believe this book should be included in the teaching of black history, even though it is written as an autobiaraphy.

Jean-Pierre Hallet was an amazing man and larger then life adventurer. He confronted the realities of life in the Belgian Congo in the 1950s and 60s with courage, fascination and reforming zeal. He tells his story with remarkable frankness to the point where there many occasions that I wondered whether this was all for real. He confronted racist colonial administrators, suspicious revolutionaries and leopards with the same steely gaze and sang froid. He earned the trust of local communities who had experienced the roughest treatment of colonialists, but who respected his deep humanity and courage. This simply extra-ordinary book will remain in my mind for a long, long time.

The exploits of this man were almost superhuman. His ability to step inside the heads of tribesmen and a wide variety of animals is astounding and insightful. He provides insight into African mindsets and culture I'm still processing. I'd call this a must read if you are interested in exceptional exploits or wish for insight into African cultures.

This is an absolutely knockout true-life adventure in Africa. Jean-Pierre Hallet tells of 12 action-packed years among the tribes of Africa. It's nice to finally see Lonely Planet print a book just on Ukraine with some current and updated info for people traveling there. The only disappointment I had was that there is very little coverage of Eastern Ukraine, the Donbass Region to be exact. Granted most tourist types won't venture to areas like Lugansk. For those who do want to brave the adventure don't rely on this book for any info. east of Donetsk. Other than that I thought the book was pretty good. It's compact size makes it easier to carry compared to when Lonely Planet combined Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus in their previous printing.

My wife was born and educated in Ukraine and spent many years there traveling all over the country, and we have made a number of recent trips to Ukraine. Her verdict on this Lonely Planet guidebook by Sarah Johnstone is: "A plus!" She kept looking up various interesting places that Miss Johnstone might have missed and she couldn't find any. They are all there. Miss Johnstone includes an amazing amount of information in a small, 8x5" paperback of 216 pages that will fit easily in a purse or bag. The book is very skillfully arranged into various headings and sections and cross references so if, for example, you're not interested in Ukraine's history you can easily skip over it. And it doesn't forget anyone: the traveler who wants adventure, the traveler who wants comfort, the student with a backpack, those who want offbeat non-touristy places, to those who are on a budget. Are you a vegetarian? Well, the author hasn't forgotten you either. There are many useful maps, all the latest Internet addresses, and a number of beautiful photographs. I am truly impressed with Ms. Johnstone depth of knowledge and how accurate she is. I can only imagine how much work it took to put this together. I have seen all the guidebooks to Ukraine and all the guidebooks with chapters on Ukraine. This is the best. I would give it six stars if I could.

Our fault for not looking at the date of publication as would have liked a more recent and up to date one. Book however in very good condition and arrived quickly.

Not a bad book if you like reading, however it is easier to use the internet to do your research about latest car models. But if you are book reader this makes a great coffee table book. Save money use the internet to find out what you need.

I gave this book as a gift to a family member who was going to the Ukraine, and we found it to be very informative and useful.

Excluding the language section, the book amounts to less than 200 pages. This is half a travel guide for a country as vast as Ukraine. Sarah Johnstone short shrifts the Russian east of the country but her short-shrifting goes beyond that. In the chapter on southern Ukraine, she covers Odessa in 10 pages (arguably adequate - as much as she devotes to all of Eastern Ukraine!!) but presents Kherson in less than half a page and skips Nikolaev entirely. Crimea is covered in 26 pages -- also insufficient given all the touristic destinations there and this is particularly reflected in her short-shrifting seconday Crimean destinations (Feodosia, Yevpatoria, etc.) She apparently visited the places that she considers interesting in Ukraine. Central Ukraine is not covered at all (Kremenchug, Kirovagrad, Kriviy Rog, Melitopol); arguably less interesting than other regions, you might nonetheless find yourself passing through on the way to more interesting destinations.Gratis you also get her Op Ed opinion pages like "Is she really going out with him?" (p. 26) where she derides Western men who date Ukrainian women (who have linked up with Western men on line) as participating in criminal acts leading to sex trafficking. Background on the country itself is a secondary element but bias-driven social commentaries have no place.The language section only includes Ukrainian phrases. The simple fact of the matter is that for all destinations in Ukraine, except for those in the Carpathian region, you are much better advised to speak Russian -- all the more so in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea.

**NOTE: This review was written about the 1st edition (with the Swallow's Nest mansion on the front), not the second edition (with the painted eggs on front). I've glanced at the second edition, and it does seem to have improved with the involvement of former Kyiv Post editor Greg Bloom.**This is probably the worst travel guide I've ever read. It completely misses the point of travel in Ukraine. It's constantly referring to the sub-standard quality of virtually everything and trashes all but three or four destinations. I can't tell you how many times I read descriptions of places I've visited an scoffed at how offhandedly they were dismissed.People don't visit Ukraine for a relaxing week of 5-star hotels and Western European-style tourism. If not looking for family or engaging in business, people come to Ukraine for a decidedly different tourist experience. Yes, it's an experience that is a little rough around the edges. But it's also filled with cheap and convenient travel, incredibly hospitable and authentic people, and rich and diverse landscapes, including snowy birch forests and rocky sub-tropical beaches. All among an interesting mix of European and Soviet history. However, this book is content to write off entire regions of Ukraine.The LP folks were recently back in Ukraine doing research for the new edition, but I'm not all that hopeful much of this can be salvaged. Go with the Bradt Guide, it's the best guide to Ukraine available.

By Way Of Explanation The Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction, popularly known as the "Greenbook", was originally published in 1967. The 200 Edition is the 12th edition of this book, which is updated and republished every three years. The original edition of the Greenbook was the product of almost four years of intensive work by a 400-person task force which then comprised the Joint Cooperative Committee. The City and County of Los Angeles were major contributors to this effort and these two agencies were the first to adopt the Greenbook. To date, more then 200 other cities, counties and agencies in the area have also adopted it as their standard for public works construction specifications. Interest in the Greenbook has been worldwide, with copies being acquired and studies by public works officials throughout the United States, Canada, and many countries overseas. Immediately after publication of the Greenbook, a permanent Joint Committee, comprised of representatives from cities, counties, utility companies, and contractors throughout Southern California was established to carry on the work. The function of this committee is to study and update the provisions of these specifications to reflect the constantly changing technology and advanced thinking of the construction industry. The first 10 editions of the Greenbook were the product of the Joint Cooperative Committee of the Southern California Chapter of the American Public Works Association, and the Southern California Districts of the Associated General Contractors of California. In December 1995, the Joint Committee formally ceased operations. In January 1996, Public Works Standards, Inc., a mutual benefit corporation, began producing the Greenbook. The Corporation's Board of Directors is comprised of nine members - five representing the American Public Works Association, and the other four from the Associated General Contractors of California, the Engineering Contractors Association, the Southern California Contractors Association, and BNI Publications, Inc. The Board appoints a 25-member Greenbook Committee which carries on the tradition and function of the original Joint Committee. This committee convenes regularly on each month to consider new changes. In each of the two years between publication of a new Greenbook edition, the changes which have been researched and approved by the committee during the preceding year, are published in pamphlet form as amendments to the current edition. This program maintains a "living" document in public works specifications. Stripes in the margin of each new edition point out significant changes in the text adopted since the preceding edition. The original edition of the Greenbook consisted of three parts: General Provisions, Construction Materials, and Construction Methods. In 1970, 1991, and 1994, Parts 4, 5 and 6 were added to provide specifications for alternate aggregate materials, pipeline system rehabilitation, and modified asphalt products, respectively. The Greenbook is designed to aid in furthering uniformity of plans and specifications accepted and used by those involved in public works construction and to take such other steps as are designed to promote more competitive bidding by private contractors. The Greenbook provides specifications that have general applicability to public works projects. The Greenbook does NOT test or approve products. It is the function of public agencies and private project owners that utilize the Greenbook to determine whether products proposed by a contractor satisfy the Greenbook specifications or the Special Provisions. I absolutely admire this woman! She is amazing, intelligent, and passionate. But I am sooo disappointed by the lack of pictures! Honestly....I love cookbooks because I love looking at food and getting inspired. But sadly, for some of the dishes, I have never even heard of them, and have no idea what I'm even trying to create. There are only a few images in the middle of the book (very "grandma's cookbook style). But they don't really help when you're trying to make a dish you've never seen before. I'll keep the book, there are some interesting ideas, but basically use margarine, almond milk and eggs substitute and you're done.

I love Mayim Bialik, so I was super stoked when I learned she had a vegan cookbook. After flipping through it, though, I'm bummed that a lot of the recipes use highly processed substitutes, such as vegan cheeses, sour cream, mayonnaise, and egg substitutes. Not for me.

I am very pleased with this book so far, but there are still lots of recipes I haven't even tried yet! I just baked the fruity oatmeal muffins the other day and got great reviews from family. I also loved the pancakes and the green smoothie. I have been vegetarian for four years, but eat so little dairy, I'm as close to vegan as one can get, so this book gives me some excellent ideas, especially for breakfasts. This one is definitely a keeper for anyone that is relatively new to plant-based eating. I'd recommend it!

I was surprised so much GMO (Tofu, Tempeh) and artificial products are used in these recipes (egg substitute, cheese substitute) as well as pasta. I didn't get the impression this was Vegan healthy living but the lack of animal as the point.Also, the first HALF of the book was to educate why you should be vegan, I don't expect that of a recipe book.

I just love Mayim from way back when she was Blossom and now that she is the only scientist that can calm Sheldon. And I love her cookbook as well! This is not just another book filled with recipes.The photographs of the food fit well and give the food even appeal and Mayim adds personal conjecture as well, such as how her young sons took to the foods. Ms. Bialik is a devotee of the Vegan-Kosher lifestyle, which is not the easiest diet to find cookbooks for. However, her recipes are simple and hearty fares that are easy to make and the ingredients are easy to find (if you live near large towns or cities). I have made several of the recipes and the majority of them were delicious. This is an excellent choice if you are on either a vegan or kosher diet...or both!

Mayim took time to give a concise but thorough introduction to the topic of veganism. It is written in such a way that the younger crowd can identify with a well-respected, well-educated peer who has not only researched this particular dietary approach to good eating but who uses it enthusiastically in her everyday life. I keep having to replace my copy! The interest it sparks in the younger generation makes it a great book to share with kids and grandkids and gives greater validity to our whole family's desire to live healthier lives and to reflect that in our eating habits.

My only wish for this book was for there to be more recipes that don't use wheat products as I'm not only converting to vegan but also trying to followWilliam Davis' "Wheat Belly" regimen of living wheat-free. Almost half of all recipes used wheat in some form. I absolutely love her guacamole recipe !.

Wonderful. Family is not vegan, but daughter and myself rarely eat meat so was looking for an alternative.

About the Author

Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Mr Newman wrote, directed and produced the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra shows which have aired nationally and feature students from more than two dozen Children's Music Workshop school programs. Excellent beginner books for the violin or viola player in their first or second year. Larry Newman has an entire series of music books for violin, viola and cello that are all excellent for players in their first few years. I would not consider these lesson books, but books to supplement beginner players to learn more popular songs. For my young boys, I have the Don't Fret colored finger guide on their 1/4 and 1/2 violins. Then to help them find the correct notes, I will sometimes use a blue, yellow, pink and green or orange highlighter to color the notes on sheet music. I know it's a learning crutch, but it makes finding and playing the correct note faster and easier....the more positive feedback they get in playing a correct note, the longer they stay with learning music and different musical instruments (I hope). I also like the books because the songs are also easy enough for the beginner player to start memorizing songs too. Between the cello, violin and viola, I think we own all of them.

My students really enjoy this book! The titles of each little song is funny and makes the learning so much nicer! In the notes are great big letters with the name of the note inside them. It makes learning Violin so much more friendly. Especially when they need something to make them comfortable right at the beginning !

Not really what I expected from the description. Yes it is a book for beginners however it is a book designed for beginners in a classroom setting with an actual violin teacher..... which she is not & I am not. A bit disappointed especially as this was a Christmas gift for my daughter.

I have a 7 year old student who has struggled with attention span during lessons. I started her out with the Essential Elements violin book, which was fine, but I saw that she was loosing interest and she said that the notes were too small. Essential Elements is a great book, but my student really needed something that was written especially with the young student in mind with pictures and big print, just as the beginner piano books are. After finding this on Amazon and getting it for her, I am pleased to say that this book made all the difference for her. She says it's a lot easier and more fun. If you have students 9 years old and under this might be the key to retaining their interest! :)

Got this for my 5yr old and he loves it!

Was hoping for a young beginner book that fills the gap between the first violin lesson and Suzuki Twinkle. This is more like "Essentials for Strings," which is a decent book the schools use, only for younger kids, with silly pictures and larger notes. Twinkle is actually used in this book as well, not the first piece, but very early on. Only a few preparatory exercises, not really performance pieces. No accompaniment that I can find? (Not as fun for the little ones!)

This looks great but hasn't been tried yet. It is part of a Christmas gift along with a violin.

Richard Saferstein, Ph.D., retired after serving 21 years as the chief forensic scientist of the New Jersey State Police Laboratory, one of the largest crime laboratories in the United States. He currently acts as a consultant for attorneys and the media in the area of forensic science. During the O. J. Simpson criminal trial, Dr. Saferstein provided extensive commentary on forensic aspects of the case for the Rivera Live show, the E! television network, ABC radio, and various radio talk shows. Dr. Saferstein holds degrees from the City College of New York and earned his doctorate degree in chemistry in 1970 from the City University of New York. From 1972 to 1991, he taught an introductory forensic science course in the criminal justice programs at the College of New Jersey and Ocean County College. These teaching experiences played an influential role in Dr. Saferstein’s authorship in 1977 of the widely used introductory textbook Criminalistics: An Introduction to Forensic Science, currently in this twelfth edition. Saferstein’s basic philosophy in writing Criminalistics is to make forensic science understandable and meaningful to the nonscience reader, while giving the reader an appreciation for the scientific principles that underlie the subject. Dr. Saferstein has authored or co-authored more than 45 technical papers and chapters covering a variety of forensic topics. The book itself is awesome. But do not buy this version that comes with the MyCJLab. The publisher (Pearson) only grants access for customers who have purchased from Pearson directly. I just spent 2 hours of dealing with customer service to find this out. Ugh!

Criminalistics is obviously for a student or professor interested in forensics. This is a standard text, maybe written a little better than some. The problem with all of these kinds of textbooks is that it is out of date a few days after you receive it...the book is already in it's next edition! What I don't understand is, does the field of criminalistics change all that much so quickly? I understand that improvements and innovations in technology happen rapidly, but in looking at this text you wonder what it is that changed. While it is a good text, covering all the essentials of criminalistics, I'm not sure it's worth the price. It would be better to rent this text from some source if you really like it rather than purchase it outright.

Some of it was hard to understand. It was just bland. I've seen so many other better text books about this subject. Some of the chapters just dragged on as well.

Bought this book for a biology class I was taking. It is very interesting with lots of cases to review and make you think. Only con is that I didn't get the "mycrimekit" registration number that should have come with the book. If you are buying this book, you want to make sure you get that number as well so you can go online and access more information.

The next version is so much better....$100 more is so worth it because the next version is so much different. Much more organized and the information in the next book is much better.

Interesting book, although it was a little different from the book I actually needed and couldn't find at the moment, but this book was as good as the newer edition. Great book it helped a lot with my Forensic Science class.

Okay book. Leaves a lot unanswered and is a bit outdated on information about collection techniques. Also includes information about hair analysis which has been discredited so be cautious!
