I have collected a great many drawing books to help kick-start my drawing projects. All of them are good, but most are redundant. I have found Lee Hammond's Big Book of Drawing to be the best all-round drawing resource. Most of the others sit gathering dust until I refer to them. Usually the Lee Hammond book is all I need.

This book is amazing! It WILL help you achieve likeness in your drawings if you've been struggling. My portrait drawing skills were okay, but I felt like there was always something off in each of my drawings, so my final drawing would look very closely related to the person I was drawing, but not like that actual person. I ordered this book last week, read through it in an afternoon, then did a portrait keeping in mind what I'd just learned regarding proportions and facial feature placement. Man, what a difference! The likeness was amazing. I'm so excited about this breakthrough, and this book made it possible. Highly recommend.

Reading this book and following each page felt like I was in an art class in an art school. The author shows detail of every part of the head and face with teaching technique with reading and beautiful drawings. In the last half of the book he teaches the reader on how to utilize different media such as pastel and paint using the same chiascuro technique. An excellent book. Highly recommended for beginning AND advanced artists.

If I could buy copies of this text and hand them out to every student in a figure drawing class that does an enviable job on the body but leaves the face blank--or, worse, cuts the figure off at the neck--I'd do it (in my dreams). If you have struggled with likeness, perspective and proportion in live model portraiture, get this book, buy the exact paper and the Carbothello pastel pencils (plus a good exacto knife with plastic blade cover) that he recommends and use them. This is a text that my portrait instructor recommended. I have seen others buy it, read it and make the leap from struggling-with-the-likeness to "Aw, MAN! I DID it!". I've secured my own capabilities using his methods as well. Although I generally work in oil pastels or acrylics, putting those aside to use the pastel pencils as directed was just the ticket for learning those lessons. I like to go back and refer to this book often. And had to order an extra copy when my last one got borrowed and not returned. It's THAT important of a book.

I really like this book! It focuses a lot on shadow shapes. Very practical. Teaches in a different way than I've seen in other books. I'm learning a lot. Idk why people were complaining about the kindle version, I have it and its great, no complaints. Definitely worth the purchase.

I took a class in portrait drawing recently. When I asked the instructor about a book, he recommended this one. I'm using it more as a reference and review than a book for learning.I find the author's explanations of principles and techniques quite understandable. It helps me remember instructions that didn't stick very well in class. I'm not sure that I would be able to learn to draw portraits from this book though. Not the book, just me. I feel the class helps a lot. To me, there is no substitute for the EXCELLENT instruction at 'the Drawing Studio' here in Tucson. The author's method just works for me.

This book is a must have for anyone who draws the figure. Specifically, it answered so many questions I had that were beyond basics. This reference definitely helped me to take my drawing to the next level. After reading, I was able to eliminate simple errors and take advantage of refinements I had overlooked. This book helps to enhance your ability to see, observe and interpret without the prejudice of preconceived knowledge. The book also served as a valuable first step in moving from drawing to painting. Overall, it's an essential addition to any art library. Loved it.

As a previous reviewer has noted, the title of this book is a bit misleading- it's not a "complete" guide to drawing the head. It really has a rather narrow focus: it concentrates on drawing three-quarter view portraits with (if you follow Maugham's instruction precisely) using two particular colors of pastel pencil on shaded drawing paper. In addition to his specific materials and subjects, Maughan concentrates on teaching chiaroscuro (use of light and shadow to depict form) in a "classical realist" style. However, for what the book really does, it does quite well. Keeping a narrow focus in a drawing instruction book is a virtue. Many drawing books (and I have a lot, since I've been trying to teach myself) try to cover far too much. They try to summarize in a page or two each of the different drawing mediums (pastel, charcoal, pencil, pen, etc.) and different elements of drawing (line, tone, etc.) while not giving you enough depth or detail about any one thing to learn much that's useful. Maughan, though, sticks to his central focus, describes the basic principles of chiaroscuro in an understandable manner, breaks down his drawing process into basic steps, and provides more demonstrations and detail than most books of this sort. The best evidence I can give in its favor is that my drawing immediately improved after I read this book and started practicing its techniques (even though I've mostly been using pencil rather pastel, so you don't have to precisely follow Maughan's recommendations).Overall, it's one of the clearest and most useful drawing instruction books that I've seen. It's not really an ideal book for people just taking the first steps in learning to draw realistic portraits (for absolute beginners I would still recommend Betty Edwards' flawed but effective "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"). It doesn't have much depth on some of the things that beginners need to learn, such as judging proportion. However, it's a good book to use early in your drawing career.
