Then add a real ghost of a PI whose own murder happened in that same spot more than 50 years ago, and you've got yourself a booming new business, a murder to solve, and a fun new cozy series!In a small town in Rhode Island, recently widowed Penelope Thornton and her Aunt Sadie have decided to host a famous mystery writer at their mystery book store. Though he is arrogant and demonstrative, his books are big sellers. But before he can really get into his talk, he drops dead at the podium. Then Penelope realizes that she can hear the ghost go the PI who was murdered in her store, and he's encouraging her to solve this new murder, before the police decide Penelope is a murderer.This fun mystery plays on the hard boiled noir mysteries of yesteryear. The ghost, Jack Shepard, dialogues in the speech of past detectives. The chapters are all headed by quotes from characters or publications that any respectable mystery buff will recognize--like Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Definitely reminiscent of the past, while creating a present mystery that will haunt you. Luckily, there are already four more in this series for me to read. This dame is ready to detect !

The humor aspect was very interesting. Having a ghost that is restricted to walls and/or windows is different. This made the person who was attuned to the ghost and other spirits do most of the work. I felt this book was a prequel to another book to come vice a story unto itself. A lot of plot twists made it longer, but not really tied into the main plot.

Highly recommend the Haunted Mansion series. I've enjoyed the Cleo Coyle author-collaboration series for years. Recently discovered the Alice Kimberly collaboration via Goodreads. Great premise, a 1940's ghost detective mentors bookshop owner Penelope Thornton-McClure in becoming a sleuth. Great humor synergy happens when the authors word-duel using the 1940 era dialogue. Side characters are well developed and added bonus as just as enjoyable as the main characters. They could do spin-off books on each one set in the same small town.

At first I almost put this down. I am not a fan of the way "dicks" are proytrayed...but maybe that is the way they actually talked. That almost put me off, the first chapter in the book. But I did like the next, the "here and now" of the co-owner of the book store. From then on I just read, straight thru. The occasional name dropping of an author, a book title mentioned I now need to go find, kept me reading as much as the story itsself. I can't wait to read the next installment.

I'm on book 2. This won't be for everyone as it switches between a ghost story narration and the main character but they are well written with a start of building strong characters over the series. This author also writes the coffeehouse series with beloved Heroine Clare Cosi. One of my favorites. I love the moving back and forth between present time and the older private eye 40's era. Reminds me of a detective show episode....like Castle's "Blue Butterfly" necklace.

and the very alive woman, here and now was a great start for this story. The “authors” had set the pace with people who really disliked the victim but the dislike was believable because he was easy to dislike. Each time Penelope (Pen) thought she had it figured out I was certain she was correct. Really good mystery with the added feature of mixing the era’s. The next story is calling my name, see ya.

Since I enjoy mysteries (not just murder) and a swirl of paranormal, I thought I would give this book a try. It does remind me of another series where a ghost is trapped in the confines of a rose bush and can only travel if the main character transports him in a vase. I enjoyed this book however it dragged in places. The 1st book in a series is usually the bumpiest. Yes, I will read the next one.

I'm not as fond of the heroine of the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries as I am bookstore owner Tricia Miles of the Booktown Mystery series (also from Berkley).Having said that, I must say that author Alice Kimberly crafts a compelling mystery. And while I may not yet fully appreciate the heroine of this work, I strongly suspect that I will come to appreciate her character more as I continue to read other books in this series.I enjoy the ghost, Jack Shepard. I quickly tired of the overuse of the words "doll" and "gam" in his vocabulary. I can only hope that the more time Jack spends with Penelope, the less need for the gangster-style words.I have to agree with other reviewers who note that there are a number of paragraphs of information that do little more than create a condescending tone. I find it almost comical when authors / editors try to disquise this tone by delivering the information as dialogue. What I question is why editors don't see past this disquise and put a stop to it.I rarely appreciate an Epilogue, however, the one included in this work is so well crafted the majority of it reads like a prose poem.I recommend this series to any mystery lover who enjoys a well-crafted quick read.

A really well written cookbook. Has within its pages some exciting recipes. Thanks.

I can sense there might be some debate in store about America's Test Kitchen's new cookbook, "The Best Mexican Recipes." There are people who pride themselves on their familiarity with authentic ethnic cuisine. Out of their passion for the real thing, they can at times become choosy about anything that isn't 100% genuine. When you consider this cookbook, I think it is for the best if you realize that it is written by America's Test Kitchen, recipe developers whose mission it is to produce consistently delicious recipes that can be replicated by the American (or should I specify estadounidense) home cook. Here is a quote from the Introduction to this cookbook: "So with this book, we set out to tell the story of Mexican cooking in the United States through a collection of foolproof recipes that range from little-known authentic dishes and Tex-Mex favorites to fresh, modern dishes inspired by the flavors of Mexico...We think this book presents the very best of American cooking put through the filter of what makes sense for the American home kitchen. No incredibly exotic local ingredients or complicated techniques best left to chefs." With that mind, I am very excited to have this collection of Mexican(ish) recipes. Here is the breakdown of chapters: 1) Getting Started (intro to ingredients, equipment, and basic methods) 2) Appetizers and Drinks 3) Soups, Stews, and Chilis 4) Tacos, Tostadas, Tamales, and More 5) Burritos, Chimichangas, and Quesadillas 6) Enchiladas and Casseroles 7) Poultry 8) Beef and Pork 9) Seafood 10) Vegetarian Mains 11) Eggs 12) SidesWHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK***So far, not much I don't like about it. The only thing is when I opened it to the halfway page and attempted to pull it to its "fully opened" book position, the binding made a noise that no binding should ever make, but maybe it was just stiff. I will, of course, update if I have any issues with the durability of the book.WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK***The size of the book--it isn't so heavy that my wrist hurts when I hold it with one hand, the way ATK's "The Best Recipe" hardcover does. It is pretty flexible and easy to page through.***Full-page illustrations of many recipes (I counted about 88), and many other smaller photos and photo sequences such as "Assembling Flautas" and "Shaping Flour Tortillas," which I expect to be tremendously useful***The "Getting Started" section at the beginning includes some helpful information, including a photo glossary of fresh and dried chiles, corn products and common Mexican seasonings/herbsTHE RECIPES***A decent variety of bold and conservative, depending on your mood or company***Some I have tried:--fresh tomato salsa (good, but I still prefer the soupy looking salsa at the local restaurant)--classic ground beef tacos (my go-to recipe for taco meat, instead of those seasoning packets)--easy chipotle chicken tacos (my husband absolutely RAVES about these tacos!)***What I am looking forward to trying: recipes for both corn tortillas and flour tortillas, enfrijoladas, queso fundido, chicken burritos mojados, cheese enchiladas (unabashedly Tex-Mex), skillet chicken fajitas, meatballs in chipotle sauce, Mexican breakfast sandwiches, cilantro rice/lime rice/chile rice, mashed spiced pumpkin, mango, jicama, and orange saladI will update as I try out some of these recipes!To conclude, this is a very user-friendly and tutorial cookbook for those who are looking for something more authentic than Taco Bell but not quite so authentic as to call for...I dunno, tripe or brains. It is a good starting point for those wishing to explore Mexican cuisine and don't want to waste time with recipes that don't turn out. You can always try a purist cookbook later if you feel the inclination, but in the meantime, you will have some solid recipes to try out. I give this an enthusiastic five stars.

This book is a bit unusual as it's about contemporary Mexican-style cuisine. What most people don’t understand is that authentic means utilizing a cooking style along with ingredients relative to a culture; it doesn’t promise traditional methods of food preparation, use of ingredients, and cooking. The book does cover some traditional Mexican recipes, while some have been modified to make it easier for modern cooks to achieve similar results. The book doesn't shy away at the fact it also focuses on Tex-Mex recipes, modern methods of cooking, and different applications of making the dish that has been proven effective in the test kitchen. A particular worthy note is the book’s effort to describe the cooking methods and showing pictures of the ingredients you’ll need to procure and substitute when you can’t. Even the best traditional Mexican cookbooks lack in well-defined explanations of the ingredients we need; this book gives a simple and concise review to minimize any confusion. There will be those that argue the book’s merit over other Mexican cookbooks as they list more traditional dishes, however, traditional isn’t always feasible and contemporary does. I would actually hope that the test kitchen would one day tackle most (if not all) of Mexican cuisine with a modern and contemporary approach along with Asian cuisine. I personally thought the book was worth buying.

This is my favorite Mexican style cookbook. What I love best about America's Test Kitchen cookbooks is that all the recipes are tested and most, if not all, can be made at home. Exotic ingredients usually have a substitution. Some of the chiles are hard to find locally but I've successfully used others. The directions are clear and there are lots of pictures to help you with new techniques.If you like your food spicy then you'll like these recipes. For myself and my family I cut back on the hotter chiles and it tastes better to us. Some of my favorite recipes are:Chunky Guacamole - I leave out the jalpeño (too spicy) and the raw onion (husband can't eat raw onions)Corn Tortillas - Never knew how easy they are to make at home. Using a ziplock bag with the sides cut out is genius. Plus homemade tortillas are very tasty.Easy Chipotle Chicken Tacos - If you already have corn tortillas, you can have this on the table in 30 minutes or less.Fish Veracruz - I used to hate fish cooked with onion and tomatoes but this recipe changed my mind. It's another fast and easy recipe.Huevos Rancheros - I've cooked this from a half a dozen different recipes and if I have time this is the best one.Pan-Roasted Cod with Amarillo Sauce - Only use two of the chiles and it's spicy enough for me. Delicious dish.Salmon with Roasted Salsa Verde - Another great fish recipe.Shredded Beef Tacos with Cabbage-Carrot Slaw - My favorite beef taco recipe when I have the time.The recipes for the common sides are good and pretty easy. The recipes frequently use canned diced tomatoes which are easy to keep on hand. The tomatillos take a bit more planning as my grocery store sells them underripe.All in all, another winning cookbook.

I love Mexican food and have been cooking for over 30 years, with basic recipes for tacos, enchilalades etc. I started cooking out of the cookbook the first day I received and loved the fish recipes. I love their tv show and other cookbooks. I like the variety of recipes and the suggestions given with the recipes. I recommend this book for new cooks as well as experienced cooks. Enjoy!!

A purchase as a gift for an enterprising young person, they really got a kick out of some of the ideas presented in this book. Her only complaint was some of the projects were really simplistic and she was above their experience level.

We were lucky enough to meet Sophie at Maker Faire in San Mateo, my daughter was completely enamored and was able to make a duct tape project. We ordered the book on our return and she is now hooked! The instructions are easy to follow and achievable, it is full of great projects for starters and up.

Sophie is full of creativity and so is this book. A great way to get everyone involved and keep the creativity flowing!

My grandson has a passion for making projects out of duct tape. I sent this along with the duct tape for some new ideas for a Christmas present.

This is a gift, but it looks like it has very manageable projects for someone over the age of 9 who enjoys creating things.

Most everything in this book you can find on her YouTube channel. Also, the kindle edition is unreadable. If it weren't for my iPad, I wouldn't even be able to read it.

Shipped super quick. Very extensive and the color is a great touch. A must buy for those into duct tape crafts. And the designs are easily adaptable to your own style.

Never knew that there was so many things you can make with duck tape.

I have been a coffee drinker my whole life, starting at age 17 when I was an athlete and drank it to "stay awake" at night to do homework. Fast forward to the present: I am a 37 year old mom of 3 who has a deep dependence on coffee to keep her going. I was able to stop for a little while during early pregnancy, but after the kids came and sleep-deprivation set-in, I came to rely on caffeine to function.So, yesterday I had downed my 5th cup of coffee and I was feeling really tired (ironic isn't it?). I had no energy and did not feel like getting off the couch. I am starting to realize that after the 2nd cup, I am basically not enjoying it anymore and using it as a crutch to function normally. I am at the point where I have coffee mugs littering my car as I cannot go anywhere without a cup of coffee. Crazy isn't it? This book helped me realize this cycle is not good for me or for my health and it needs to stop. I wake up tired, and I go to sleep tired. I sleep all night now (the children are older so they do not wake up much anymore), so why the heck and I consuming so much coffee? Do I really "love" it that much? The answer is "no". And my sleep quality should be much better than it is - so why drink all this caffeine and feel bad all the time?I did a google search and came up with this short book about quitting caffeine. I am always of the mindset that that I will "cut back" but it only lasts a few days and I am downing the 5th cup by the end of the week. This book taught me how addictive caffeine really is, and suggests some helpful ways for mentally getting myself off the drug for good.Although this book promotes a "cold turkey" approach, I really do not think that is healthy for me to try. Given that I drink 5-6 cups daily, I have 3 children and do not have the luxury of resting, taking naps, or dealing with a big headache, I will err on the side of caution and "taper down."So, this morning I only allowed myself 2 cups at 7am. I shut off the Keuring after 7am and I have not walked back to it since. The great part is I have no DESIRE to have that coffee after reading the book yesterday. This is the part that amazes me.I do have a headache now - it is 1pm (it is not that bad though), and I have kept myself away from the coffee pot. By now, I would be on my 5th cup. Carr talks alot about how not to "feed the monster" of addiction. For me, this caffeine monster is separate from myself and helps me visualize what I am doing every time I reach for a cup of coffee. I keep telling myself "I am not going to feed the coffee monster in my brain" and it actually works!I plan to do 2 cups again tomorrow, then do 1 cup for a few days. Ultimately, I would love to stop completely, but if I can have 1 cup a day and still feel energetic, I might continue as I do like the taste of coffee (Carr says it is a bitter "poison" but that seems a bit extreme. Coffee does have some scientifically proven health benefits!) However, Carr states that the taste is basically a justification for the habit and the addiction to the actual caffeine than the coffee itself...I am not 100% sure of that. I like the taste of wine too, and not just because of the alcohol in it.All I know is my poor sleep quality (how can someone get 8 hours and not feel rested?), roller coaster moods, and lethargy have to stop. Carr's books is the first resource that is helping me "see the light" on this issue. Thank you Mr. Carr!

Made me quit coffee for good. Works 100% and I recommend the book. After I quit, the first couple of days I had some headaches and I felt tired - so I allowed myself extra sleep. I suggest you make the final decision to quit during a weekend so you can take extra time to rest. Also have a few aspirins if you have strong headache. The physical withdrawal symptoms lasted about 3 days. Funny to realize how you are much more awake without coffee, especially in the morning. Once you quit be careful about not drinking coffee again, even one latte will bring you back into the addiction (it happened to me). Once you're out of it, you start to realize how powerful of a drug coffee really is.

Both Allen Carrs caffeine and sugar books changed the way I view these harmful things I used to enjoy. Quitting was truly easy, I don't miss it, and I feel better than I ever have. I wish more people were interested in quitting harmful things so I could recommend his books more.

With 15 steps...actions and thoughts you can be free from something that shouldn't be in your body or part of your daily habits.The author has laid out his addiction code breaking in an "Easyway"....just like his program.Quick and easy to read, I highly recommend this eBook.

I'd recommend reading this book after reading "Caffeine Blues: Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America's #1 Drug" as I did before kicking the addiction although for some it may be enough by itself.It is a short book comparing to other Allen Carr's books and it follows the same logic explaining why there is really nothing to lose in quitting caffeine. For me it was the last drop and I'd recommend to read it if you thinking about kicking addiction.

Love all Allen Carr's materials. This book was not written by Mr. Carr, but it is in the same tone. I found it very effective and haven't had any coffee for over 2 months. I highly recommend 'The Easy Way to Control Your Drinking' as well. So simple!! My husband used the smoking book about 5 years ago. Easy Way is just plain genius!!

My SO has used The Easy Way to Quit Drinking, Smoking and now Caffeine. It truly is the easy way. There's such a difference in trying to have willpower vs. understanding you don't want it. Not wanting it makes it so much easier.

The book was an easy read and very motivating. I am on day 4 of no caffeine & reading this book really helped me get excited about my new found freedom from that nasty drug.

This is not the type of stuff you read for pleasure, but you read with the assistance of a college course on Asian American lit.

I'll give Frank Chin this-- his two plays The Chickencoop Chinaman and The Year of the Dragon have some important ideas that deserve to be thought about and discussed. What does it mean to be an Asian American? How much is assimilation a part of Asian American culture, and is that good or bad? Where did Chinatowns come from? How do the races get along, and where are there misunderstandings that could be improved upon?All of these are great questions, and they are all addressed in the plays, but two points really hamper the messages for readers now. First, the messages are dated. With the plays first being produced in the early 1970s, cultural relations and ideals have changed, and from the anger and vitriol that appear in these plays, this would appear to be a good thing. Second, it is very hard to care about the characters or what they do. Both plays have rude, obnoxious lead characters who shout a lot but accomplish little. By the time I finished reading the plays, I was exhausted and wishing for a normal conversation with a person who at least tried to understand others. This inability to communicate and feeling of being lost in America may be a main theme of the two plays, but it is not one that is handled in an engaging way.All in all, while I didn't enjoy these plays, I give them three stars because they are thought-provoking and can lead to some insight into another culture, especially at the time period of the '70s, but even as they have changed over time.A note on the plays: Of the two, The Year of the Dragon is more entertaining as it deals with a man's desire to make a better life for himself as long as he can go against his father's will. The plot is engaging, but the hard-to-read vernacular language, bloody-mindedness of the characters, and constant balmovements of the characters detract from the overall feel of the work. (I'm not kidding about the balmovements; a large portion of this play deals with characters going to the bathroom, lighting matches, and even the father "shoving out the world's longest turd.") Sophisticated stuff. The first play, The Chickencoop Chinaman, is a very difficult read with some blatant racism and sexism that is hard to stomach. I almost didn't make it through, and I am not 100% pleased that I did.The bottom line is this: if you are looking for getting your ideas about Asian Americans and Chinese culture in a somewhat entertaining fashion, this is not the work for you. If you are just interested in the ideas and the literary importance of Frank Chin, however, go for it.

Out of junk-imports, lies, railraod scrap iron, dirty jokes, broken bottles, cigar smoke, Cosquilla Indian blood, wino spit, and lots of milk of amnesia." It's no wonder that this play is the first Asian American play produced off-Broadway. It is controversial (for good reason), angry, and thought-provoking. About the Author

Sarah B. Keating, MPH, EdD, RN, C-PNP, FAAN, retired as Endowed Professor, Orvis School of Nursing, University of Nevada Reno (UNR), where she taught Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing, Instructional Design and Evaluation and the Nurse Educator Practicum, and was Director of the DNP program. She has taught nursing since 1970 and received her EdD in Curriculum and Instruction in 1982. Dr. Keating was previously Director of Graduate programs at Russell Sage College (Troy, NY) and Chair of Nursing, San Francisco State University; Dean of Samuel Merritt-Saint Mary's Intercollegiate Nursing Program (1995-2000), Adjunct Professor at Excelsior College, and Chair of the California Board of Registered Nursing Education Advisory Committee (2003-2005). She has received many awards and recognitions, has published in numerous journals, and has been the recipient of 15 funded research grants, two from HRSA. Dr. Keating led the development of numerous educational programs including nurse practitioner, advanced practice community health nursing, clinical nurse leader, case management, entry-level MSN programs, nurse educator tracks, the DNP, and MSN/MPH programs. In addition, she served as a consultant in curriculum development and evaluation for undergraduate and graduate nursing programs and serves as a reviewer for Substantive Change proposals for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accrediting body. Dr. Keating published the firs through third editions of Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing.

Would be a helpful text in a graduate course on curriculum development. This is a foundational text. Experienced faculty leading a major curriculum change will find it too basic. Issues around teaching out a curriculum while starting a new one, budget issues and leading change are not addressed.
