I have been a coffee drinker my whole life, starting at age 17 when I was an athlete and drank it to "stay awake" at night to do homework. Fast forward to the present: I am a 37 year old mom of 3 who has a deep dependence on coffee to keep her going. I was able to stop for a little while during early pregnancy, but after the kids came and sleep-deprivation set-in, I came to rely on caffeine to function. So, yesterday I had downed my 5th cup of coffee and I was feeling really tired (ironic isn't it?). I had no energy and did not feel like getting off the couch. I am starting to realize that after the 2nd cup, I am basically not enjoying it anymore and using it as a crutch to function normally. I am at the point where I have coffee mugs littering my car as I cannot go anywhere without a cup of coffee. Crazy isn't it? This book helped me realize this cycle is not good for me or for my health and it needs to stop. I wake up tired, and I go to sleep tired. I sleep all night now (the children are older so they do not wake up much anymore), so why the heck and I consuming so much coffee? Do I really "love" it that much? The answer is "no". And my sleep quality should be much better than it is - so why drink all this caffeine and feel bad all the time?I did a google search and came up with this short book about quitting caffeine. I am always of the mindset that that I will "cut back" but it only lasts a few days and I am downing the 5th cup by the end of the week. This book taught me how addictive caffeine really is, and suggests some helpful ways for mentally getting myself off the drug for good.Although this book promotes a "cold turkey" approach, I really do not think that is healthy for me to try. Given that I drink 5-6 cups daily, I have 3 children and do not have the luxury of resting, taking naps, or dealing with a big headache, I will err on the side of caution and "taper down."So, this morning I only allowed myself 2 cups at 7am. I shut off the Keuring after 7am and I have not walked back to it since. The great part is I have no DESIRE to have that coffee after reading the book yesterday. This is the part that amazes me.I do have a headache now - it is 1pm (it is not that bad though), and I have kept myself away from the coffee pot. By now, I would be on my 5th cup. Carr talks alot about how not to "feed the monster" of addiction. For me, this caffeine monster is separate from myself and helps me visualize what I am doing every time I reach for a cup of coffee. I keep telling myself "I am not going to feed the coffee monster in my brain" and it actually works!I plan to do 2 cups again tomorrow, then do 1 cup for a few days. Ultimately, I would love to stop completely, but if I can have 1 cup a day and still feel energetic, I might continue as I do like the taste of coffee (Carr says it is a bitter "poison" but that seems a bit extreme. Coffee does have some scientifically proven health benefits!) However, Carr states that the taste is basically a justification for the habit and the addiction to the actual caffeine than the coffee itself...I am not 100% sure of that. I like the taste of wine too, and not just because of the alcohol in it.All I know is my poor sleep quality (how can someone get 8 hours and not feel rested?), roller coaster moods, and lethargy have to stop. Carr's books is the first resource that is helping me "see the light" on this issue. Thank you Mr. Carr!

Made me quit coffee for good. Works 100% and I recommend the book. After I quit, the first couple of days I had some headaches and I felt tired - so I allowed myself extra sleep. I suggest you make the final decision to quit during a weekend so you can take extra time to rest. Also have a few aspirins if you have strong headache. The physical withdrawal symptoms lasted about 3 days. Funny to realize how you are much more awake without coffee, especially in the morning. Once you quit be careful about not drinking coffee again, even one latte will bring you back into the addiction (it happened to me). Once you're out of it, you start to realize how powerful of a drug coffee really is.

Both Allen Carrs caffeine and sugar books changed the way I view these harmful things I used to enjoy. Quitting was truly easy, I don't miss it, and I feel better than I ever have. I wish more people were interested in quitting harmful things so I could recommend his books more.

With 15 steps...actions and thoughts you can be free from something that shouldn't be in your body or part of your daily habits. The author has laid out his addiction code breaking in an "Easyway"....just like his program.Quick and easy to read, I highly recommend this eBook.

I'd recommend reading this book after reading "Caffeine Blues: Wake Up to the Hidden Dangers of America's #1 Drug" as I did before kicking the addiction although for some it may be enough by itself. It is a short book comparing to other Allen Carr's books and it follows the same logic explaining why there is really nothing to lose in quitting caffeine. For me it was the last drop and I'd recommend to read it if you thinking about kicking addiction.

Love all Allen Carr's materials. This book was not written by Mr. Carr, but it is in the same tone. I found it very effective and haven't had any coffee for over 2 months. I highly recommend 'The Easy Way to Control Your Drinking' as well. So simple!! My husband used the smoking book about 5 years ago. Easy Way is just plain genius!!

My SO has used The Easy Way to Quit Drinking, Smoking and now Caffeine. It truly is the easy way. There's such a difference in trying to have willpower vs. understanding you don't want it. Not wanting it makes it so much easier.

The book was an easy read and very motivating. I am on day 4 of no caffeine & reading this book really helped me get excited about my new found freedom from that nasty drug.

Review

"There can be no question.about the ability of the gifted, passionate, funny Mr. Chin; his characters are playable, complex and always convincing, and the words they speakm are always theirs and theirs alone."―The New Yorker"The Year of the Dragon barges through the comfortable stereotypes of the Asian American―-the quiet, hardworking contented characcter who keeps to himself, rarely bothering the white community. It is not an 'easy' play. The language is frequently strong, and the bitterness, even when wrapped in some very funny comedy, is unrelenting..But as a portrait of an Asian American's furious struggle for identity, the play is a searing statement, a powerful cry."―The New York Times"If the main character represents the second generation, we would have no hope. He has no warmth. He lacks understanding. His actions are despicable."―Chinese Pacific Weekly"One does not have to agree with Chin's views to be profoundly affected by his arguments. They are well observed, richly detailed and sharply focused."―Pacific Citizen

Classic.

The thing with Frank Chin is that he really makes the reader work. You're going to read his fiction and think to yourself, "What in the world is he talking about?!"The thing with Frank Chin's fiction is that his ideas are far more compelling than the stories themselves or his writing style:-the idea that a "Chickencoop Chinaman" is farmed and created in isolation by a society built on internal colonialism-the lack of role models for Chinese men in America, which leads the protagonist to desperately believe that the Lone Ranger is AsianLike all of his works of fiction, The Chickencoop Chinaman and The Year of the Dragon are rough reads. This is not the type of stuff you read for pleasure, but you read with the assistance of a college course on Asian American lit.

I'll give Frank Chin this-- his two plays The Chickencoop Chinaman and The Year of the Dragon have some important ideas that deserve to be thought about and discussed. What does it mean to be an Asian American? How much is assimilation a part of Asian American culture, and is that good or bad? Where did Chinatowns come from? How do the races get along, and where are there misunderstandings that could be improved upon? All of these are great questions, and they are all addressed in the plays, but two points really hamper the messages for readers now. First, the messages are dated. With the plays first being produced in the early 1970s, cultural relations and ideals have changed, and from the anger and vitriol that appear in these plays, this would appear to be a good thing. Second, it is very hard to care about the characters or what they do. Both plays have rude, obnoxious lead characters who shout a lot but accomplish little. By the time I finished reading the plays, I was exhausted and wishing for a normal conversation with a person who at least tried to understand others. This inability to communicate and feeling of being lost in America may be a main theme of the two plays, but it is not one that is handled in an engaging way.All in all, while I didn't enjoy these plays, I give them three stars because they are thought-provoking and can lead to some insight into another culture, especially at the time period of the '70s, but even as they have changed over time.A note on the plays: Of the two, The Year of the Dragon is more entertaining as it deals with a man's desire to make a better life for himself as long as he can go against his father's will. The plot is engaging, but the hard-to-read vernacular language, bloody-mindedness of the characters, and constant balmovements of the characters detract from the overall feel of the work. (I'm not kidding about the balmovements; a large portion of this play deals with characters going to the bathroom, lighting matches, and even the father "shoving out the world's longest turd.") Sophisticated stuff. The first play, The Chickencoop Chinaman, is a very difficult read with some blatant racism and sexism that is hard to stomach. I almost didn't make it through, and I am not 100% pleased that I did.The bottom line is this: if you are looking for getting your ideas about Asian Americans and Chinese culture in a somewhat entertaining fashion, this is not the work for you. If you are just interested in the ideas and the literary importance of Frank Chin, however, go for it.

to challenge the stereotypes of Chinese. You need only read these famous lines in Chickencoop Chinaman: "Chinamen are made, not born, my dear. Out of junk-imports, lies, railraod scrap iron, dirty jokes, broken bottles, cigar smoke, Cosquilla Indian blood, wino spit, and lots of milk of amnesia." It's no wonder that this play is the first Asian American play produced off-Broadway. It is controversial (for good reason), angry, and thought-provoking. Did you know that George Takei played Fred Eng in The Year of the Dragon?

Would be a helpful text in a graduate course on curriculum development. This is a foundational text. Experienced faculty leading a major curriculum change will find it too basic. Issues around teaching out a curriculum while starting a new one, budget issues and leading change are not addressed.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes just six months ago. It came as a shock and I did not want to believe it. My doctor told me to pay attention to glycemic load. Because I knew nothing about it I decided to study up before actually trying it, so I kept eating what I thought was a relatively good diet for diabetics. But I had a hard time understanding why my numbers were good one day, even though I thought I was creating, and not so good the next. After reading this book I now understand that I was accidentally doing the right thing by cutting out starch. But this book has provided me with so much information that I feel like for the first time I'm on the right path to losing weight and controlling my diabetes. And now that I understand how my medication works and why, I no longer fight my doctor about taking it. Thank you for finally having the answer.

After purchasing other Glycemic Index diet books, this is the author - and books - I went with. Of several books by Rob Thompson, I feel this one is the best. The Glycemic Load approach make more logical sense to me over Glycemic Index. Plus this book teaches you how to block blood glucose spikes by eating starch (sugar) "blockers" before I eating a portion of sweet potato. This is so easy it shouldn't be called a diet. No hunger cravings.I've drop 12.5 lbs in last 6 weeks by eliminating fruit juices (but NOT raw fruit) and minimizing starch. - I've gone from a 28 BMI to a 26 BMI but my actual goal is a waist-to-height ratio below 50%. I'm using bone broth as a bone/ joint medication which helps with diet total calorie count. In fact, I may have to actually over-eat if trend continues because weight loss is too rapid and I risk losing muscle.

I've read lots of these kinds of books and this is one of my favorites. This book is for people dedicated to changing their health, but are just starting their education in what to do. It goes the extra mile with advice and tools for newly interested folks. Its also for those people that have tried and failed all the extreme diets eliminating all fats or carbs or completely labeling this good or bad. If you want to come back to earth I recommend this book. The title makes you think this is another stupid diet book, but really its just some good education, advice and techniques from a medical professional that has a personnal connection with the topic. I quickly think of my friends that dont know much about how to eat healthy and how this book could get them on the right path with methods that dont require a mentally derranging complete elimination of one macro nutrient or another. This is not an extreme diet, rather informative in layman's terms that excessive insulin due to high glycimic diets is a key factor in our modern health crisis. This author quickly and efficently conveys his message and im glad to report you dont need to eat a ketogenic diet to experience the effects of lower insulin on your fat storage, appatite, sleep and many other things. It's a great book for people that have come to realize that no carb is not sustainable, but believe in the basic premise of no junk carbs and less carbs. In a nut shell, by choosing your carbs based on glycimic load and using a few tricks when you occasionally eat a higher glicemic meal you can make a real difference. Having read this theory in other books, i do feel his advice refined my understanding of what to look out for and ulrimately how to know if his guidance is working for you. While the premis of the book is sugar blocking to to reduce insulin production, his message of what large amounts of easily digestible starch do to your health via metabolic syndrome has compelled me to eat very small portions or none at all. When my dedication wavers there are the sugar blocking techiqued, but im pretty happy with the low glycimic fruits and berries or a brisk walk after a moderate glycimic food. If you try to use his advice while continuing to eat terribly, I doubt it will transform your life, but may help.

I am a bread lover, so when my doctor said my HA1C number was 5.7 and my fasting blood sugar was 108, I took notice and bought this book. That was about 6 months ago. My total cholesterol was 211, which isn't THAT bad. My triglicerides were 135 and LDLC was 122. Ouch! Thankfully, my HDLC was 62. Anyway, I started following some of the suggestions that I read in this book and last week I had blood work again. My HA1C is now 5.5 which is normal. My fasting blood sugar was 82. 3 months ago, my fasting blood sugar was 96. So the trend has been downward. My total cholesterol from my latest blood work is 171, with triglicerides at 67, LDLC at 97, and HDLC at 61. I am very happy that these dietary changes appear to really work. I have been eating more salads, particularly at lunch. Also, I have cut way back on breads and only eat some after I have eaten some protein. Amazingly, I am not bread starved either. I have even lost a couple pounds, but I am not overweight anyway. I highly recommend this book. Easy to read, entertaining and it works!

truly a miracle book for my husband that has been diagnosed with type II diabetes.!!!! TRULY a MIRACLE because my husband is able to follow the advice easily and happily. I read reviews and take most with a grain of salt BUT this time, I have to post because we are so happy we have this man's advice!!! We put the first tips into practice and my husband saw an IMMEDIATE difference in his blood sugar readings. His doctor had him on 1500 mg of metformin AND an additional medicine called onglyza. This drove me nuts. I have my own feelings that being on all of these meds but not tweaking your diet properly makes your body dependent on the meds...causing you to take more and more and eventually be on insulin. My sister recommended the book for weight loss but I started reading it for my husband. He is now OFF of Onglyza and down to 1000 mg of metformin......when he shows his numbers to the doctor, he may be able to reduce further. This book is for EVERYONE..I am having my 17 year old son take heed and he, too, is happy to follow the advice and diet recommendations. He doesn't want to end up hurting his body with too much sugar.

Voices from the Second World War: Stories of War as Told to Children of Today, by Candlewick Press

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—This collection of memoirs of World War II survivors was first published in England by First News, an award-winning children's newspaper, and the Silver Line, a helpline dedicated to serving older adults. Present-day children were asked to interview elderly family members and friends who had served in the military or had been children during the war. Most of the stories, told in first person, are recollections of what the individuals experienced as children. Some interviewees describe their lives as young adults or as members of the military. At least eight different nationalities are featured, including English, French, German, Italian, and Japanese. Among those profiled are the navigator of the Enola Gay, authors Shirley Hughes and Judith Kerr, and an atomic bomb survivor from Hiroshima. Many of the pieces are accompanied by a photo of the biographee and the interviewer or early and current photos of the subject. Full-page vintage black-and-white photos are paired with the introduction of each chapter. (The artwork on the colorful cover is reminiscent of 1940s war posters.) VERDICT This title will help readers understand that war affects real-life people, including children. A solid choice for collections that serve middle school students.—Eldon Younce, Anthony Public Library, KS

Firsthand accounts of World War II, many collected by modern children...A fine tool for any child interested in history as well as for classroom, school, and public libraries.—Kirkus ReviewsWWII ended more than 70 years ago, yet interest in it remains evergreen, as this fascinating work of living history evidences...Though many of those featured are elderly—one is more than 100 years old—their memories are vivid and bring to light the realities of war in this valuable collection.—BooklistFirst published in Britain, this is an anthology of firsthand accounts collected by children who interviewed elderly relatives and neighbors about their war experiences...the book traces the broader course of the conflict while making the suffering it inflicted and the heroism it inspired personal and relatable. One reporter notes: ‘There were many people…for whom the events of the war were so agonizing they never talked about their experiences. I believe it is important that we hear those stores.’ Numerous photos put faces to the storytellers. Grade: A—Plain DealerThis title will help readers understand that war affects real-life people, including children. A solid choice for collections that serve middle school students.—School Library JournalBecause the majority of the interviews were done by and written for children, the accounts are not overly graphic, making this an ideal book to keep in upper elementary/middle school classes and libraries. It is an excellent resource for history buffs and for those who may not know much about the time period.—School Library Connection

Binding was coming apart, easy to fix if you know how. The book is what was wanted for an 8 year old who is very curious about the world.

It doesn't get any better than this: stories from the people who lived it. A must-read for every fan of WWII history.

I loved this book! I have read many books on World War II, but none have been quite like this one. The first-person accounts from mostly ordinary people are filled with small details that really make their stories come alive. Contributors include people who experienced the war from a variety of perspectives such as those who were young children when Hitler came to power and war broke out, as well as men and women who served their countries during the conflict. There are reports from people of many different nations, including women who worked as Land Girls, children who survived the Holocaust, youth who fought with the Resistance in Italy and France, men who were captured by the Japanese army, and a boy who was living in Hiroshima when the bomb was dropped there. Some of the narratives are only a couple of paragraphs, while a few are several pages. Most of them are just a couple of pages long. The book is well organized with chapters on the British Homefront, the Resistance, Women at War, The Holocaust, The Fall of Japan and many other topics. The text is enhanced by many black and white photographs. A subject index, an index of contributors and a glossary are included at the end of the book. One could use this book as a reference to learn about just one aspect of the war, but each story is worth reading. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about this important event in history.Although most of the accounts are told in such a way that they are accessible to all ages, there is some content that may not be appropriate for young children. There are a few religious profanities and since this is book about war, there are some disturbing descriptions of violence. Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

Voices from the Second World War is a collection of short, but captivating, stories from the interesting perspective of people who lived through WWII. Some of the stories are inspiring tales of miraculous survival and others are simply heart wrenching. The stories help the reader to imagine what life must have been like, especially for children caught in the war. I couldn’t help but to think of how different those children’s lives were from my carefree childhood. I believe this book is best suited for middle school ages and above due to the intense subject matter that one would expect on this topic. I enjoyed learning more about WWII though these intriguing stories.I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not obligated to write a positive review.

This book was first published in England in association with First News, a children's newspaper. The book's foundation is a collection of interviews children conducted with their friends and family who lived through World War II.This is an absolute gem of a book, and I'm so glad that it was published. This collection of the stories of ordinary people who lived through the war is a great way to preserve history. The book groups the interviews into categories, such as evacuated children, D-Day, and The Holocaust. The breadth of the stories gives readers a greater understanding of the various facets of the war, from the tragedies, to the heroics, to the mundanities.Because the interviews were organized in Britain, there is, understandably, greater representation of British war stories, but I was impressed with the variety of experiences and nationalities represented.

Author Will Greene's Volume I of the 9 month Petersburg Richmond campaign is an excellent study of command not just between the primaries Lee and Grant but Beauteguard, Mahone, Hill and Union Meade, Smith, Burnside, Warren, Sheridan and Ord. Due to the campaign's length and numerous Union offensives the Petersburg campaign is often seen as a challenging study but through articulate writing, great research with first hand accounts and numerous well designed battle maps, Greene explains the complexities of the campaign fluidly. Volume 1 features Beaufreguard's finest days and the Union's numerous lost opportunities although affected by war weary soldiers. Volume I ends with the infamous Battle of the Crater that coincides with an offensive on the Richmond side. The intricate relationship between Grant in Meade is fascinating through the early part of the campaign. I look forward to Volume II to see if that relationship changed in the management of the Army of the Potomac.

The Civil War is enigmatic for many reasons. One is that it is a story of lost opportunities. Each side came close to decisive victories that might have decided the war at an earlier date, but were bungled such that the war dragged on longer, and killed far more soldiers, than a reasonable fate should have allowed. The story told by A. Wilson Greene of the siege of Petersburg fits this template of a bungled campaign that might have won the war for the Union in 1864, but instead came close to losing it. This is his first volume covering the Crossing of the James to the Battle of the Crater. Why did the battles for Petersburg and Richmond last so long, and cost the Union so many casualties that Lincoln feared he would not be re-elected in 1864?The Union commanded overwhelming resources. The two states of New York and Pennsylvania, close to the seat of the rebellion in Northern Virginia, alone had more white men eligible for service, and more economic power than the entire Confederacy. New York City was an urban area of 1.5 million people. Philadelphia had 600,000. Boston and Baltimore had nearly 200,000 each. Richmond and Petersburg together had 65,000. The manpower the urbanized North could theoretically bring against the Rebels in Virginia should have crushed them. The Union had already driven the Confederacy back hundreds of miles from Arizona and New Mexico; had opened the Mississippi Valley down to New Orleans and driven through Kentucky and Tennessee to lay siege to Atlanta. But they were balked in front of Petersburg, barely more than 130 miles from their capital at Washington. What was it about the Confederates at Petersburg that made them so hard to defeat in 1864 when they were supposedly beaten down by three years of attrition?Greene tells the unvarnished truth, without PC revisionism. It boils down to:1. Confederate faith in Robert E. Lee.===The soldiers showed Lee their unmistakable devotion when the army commander attended an April review of Longstreet’s corps. “You never saw such cheering in your life,” marveled one Rebel. The troops pressed around Lee, seeking to touch his horse or better yet, brush the general’s leg in passing. “A wave of sentiment . . . seemed to sweep over the field,” remembered an artillery officer. “All felt the bond which held them together. There was no speaking, but the effect was as of a military sacrament.” One Confederate stated the matter with perfect clarity: “Every man in that army believed that Robert E. Lee was the greatest man alive.”2. The cohesion of Confederate units who fought together to defend their country and their slave-based way of life.3. The mediocrity of the Union army. Greene shows that many Northern soldiers stood the test of duty and died as readily to save the Union as Southern men to break it. But he also makes clear that the quality of both armies was severely degraded by prior losses. The Federal army of 1864 no longer had the backbone of enthusiastic volunteers of earlier years, but was largely composed of conscripts and bounty-jumpers. That showed in the bungling of assaults on Petersburg, culminating in the Battle of the Crater. The Confederates were hurting from the loss of experienced men too, but defending from trenches gave them a relative advantage.4. The failure of the Federal Army to employ its newly liberated African-American soldiers effectively. African-Americans were in a strange new world of freedom in a country that was still institutionally racist in the South and personally racist in the North. Greene points out that Northern men sometimes shot their African-American comrades in the back when the Confederates were about to capture a unit, so that the Confederates would not shoot the white soldiers they captured too. Of course, African-Americans stood the test of war and racism, but their service for the Union was not as effective as it might have been.Greene succeeds in doing what a popular history book like this is supposed to do, which is to put the reader in the middle of the scene and experience the battles as the participants did. This is the unvarnished story of the campaign that might have lost the war for the Union, had the Northern armies not had concurrent successes at Atlanta, Mobile, and the Shenandoah Valley.

Continuous contact between the two armies is a defining characteristic of the Civil War in Virginia beginning in May 1864. This was a breakthrough innovation by US Grant that eventually decided the war, yet, somewhat inexplicably, goes unrecognized. It presents a problem with respect to the tradition in Civil War battle histories, where the armies were separated before and after, allowing a preparation or buildup phase and the immediate consequences to be developed either side of the battle itself into a relatively neat narrative package, e.g., Chancellorsville or Gettysburg. Continuous contact in the Petersburg campaign means that these distinct phases can’t readily be isolated for its engagements, and that battles of varying scale and significance took place relatively frequently (analogous to the Overland Campaign) so its history needs to cover its total extent. This seemingly tall order is being attempted by in the multivolume “A Campaign of Giants” for which the first installment has been released. Although the outcome of the Petersburg campaign effectively decided the war, histories of it are much less prominent than for the well-known battles of 1862-1863, so the appearance of a comprehensive history should be well received. Although there are shortcomings, judging from Volume 1, it is off to a pretty good start.“A Campaign of Giants” does a good job of describing what happened in June and July at and around Petersburg. The maps appear to be generally good and well matched to the text (however, it should be noted that an Order of Battle is not given). What is not included is thorough coverage is why the operations developed as they did, and what their significance was with respect to the wider Civil War. For this aspect of the campaign, I read Earl Hess’s “In the Trenches at Petersburg” in parallel. Hess provides a number of valuable insights into these operations, especially on the Federal side, for example that Grant and Meade recognized after the failure of the mid-June assaults that defensive entrenchments could be constructed faster than existing works, if taken by assault, could be exploited; hence the absence of further attacks on the Harris-Dimmock line and the skepticism of the prospects for Burnside’s mine attack. The book is not without issues. One is an approach that relies predominantly on primary sources (mainly the Official Records, correspondence, and memoirs). The trouble with participants’ recollections is that generally there are multiple sources with conflicting opinions on the same event, which isn’t overtly helpful in understanding what happened. One judgement that the author does make is that RE Lee maintained an aggressive outlook during this period. No substantial evidence for this is presented, however. Lee would appear to have had several opportunities to attack (and Meade assumed he would), after the fight at the Jerusalem Plank Road and the Battle of the Crater for example, but chose to remain in the entrenchments. It is more likely that Lee by this stage had determined that the offensive capability of the Army of Northern Virginia was spent. (Lee’s reaction to the ‘massacre’ during the Battle of the Crater, a stain on the honor of the Army of Northern Virginia, is not reported, but I suspect it confirmed to him a deterioration in morale and discipline.) Also, an unjustified anti-Meade bias seems to run through the narrative. The main complaint is that Meade did not take a direct role in overseeing on-going operations. However, the same criticism can be, but is not, made of Lee. For example, Ewell, Anderson, and Kershaw fumbled at First Deep Bottom; yet Lee did not intervene or take control.

Knowledge of the battle for Petersburg is critical to understanding how the South eventually lost the War and how Grant matured in his ability to engage Lee in a strategy of movement and geographical restriction that ultimately led to a stalemate that the Army of Northern Virginia could not overcome. This volume is a terrific addition to any Civil War buff's library and is both well--researched and well-written by a master historian. I can't wait for the next volume in this study.
